MoreIBNR - it's my second Norton, this one is a 1975 850 Roadster. Many years ago had a '72 model (stolen)- before that a 69 Honda 350 (totaled), there's more but...
I buy lots of Wal-Mart stuff - think it has anything to do with my wife being a manager? Apology to many readers as this reply properly belongs in babble, but didn't want to start a new thread |

I was a bit puzzled by the WalMart oil filter recommendation for the SVX. Whereas Fram lists the same filter for the 97 SVX and 95 Legacy, WalMart only lists theirs for the SVX and nothing for the Legacy.
Can anyone shed some light on this anomaly and possibly confirm what the correct filter number is?

I use SVX filters on my Justy
(they are a little bit larger)

The stock SVX filter is slightly different than the stock Legacy filter, but either one will work and most aftermarket companies use the same filter for both applications.
And correct me if I'm wrong, but if you had an oil filter with a bypass valve couldn't you feel the oil filter after you're done driving and see if it is hot? If it was, you'd know that oil is still being cleaned and not bypassing a "full" filter wouldn't you? David Last edited by red95svx; 08-14-2002 at 08:05 PM. |

Thanks for the sizing info.
I would think that as the filter starts to clog, bypass would occur under hard acceleration when demand for oil is greater, but the valve would close under low demand conditions. Feeling the temperature of the filter might then give you a false impression that everything is ok.

I cannot imagine any filter clogging under anything near normal circumstances such that the by pass valve comes into play. I don't think this would ever happen if you change oil and filter regularly unless something is drastically wrong.
