Pre-Cats

After frying my main cat at Summit Point, I'm thinking it is time to replace the pre-cats also. Magnaflow has a universal fit unit #50004, which says it is suitable as a replacement for the OEM pre-cat and which costs about 1/3 as much. Looking at the diagram on Subaruparts.com, it looks like the O2 sensor mounts just upstream of the pre-cats. Does anyone know whether there might be a problem with pulling out the OEM pre-cat and putting in a replacement? Thanks.

I was planning on doing the same with my system, and replacing the main cat with a Magnaflow cat # 94007. The only problem is that the Magnaflow pre-cats are 2" in and out, and their main cat is 2" in, 2.5" out. I think the pre-cat piping is smaller than 2".

I'm thinking of just cutting the pre-cats off from the rest of the pipe, finding the apropriate adapter, and clamping or welding the magnaflow parts onto the old pipes.

Or you can just buy some flanges and build your own 2" pre-cat pipes.

I think the pre-cat piping is the same size as the inlets to the main cat, which is 2". My muffler guy thought I would need the pre-cats to pass emissions.

It depends on where you measure the piping.
Right after the header flange they are 2.11"
for most of the front pre-cat inlet pipe, it is 1.91"
after the pre-cat its pipe is 1.68"-1.61".
According to Magnaflow the 94007 is legal in 48 states.
Good morning Dan, Pilot.

Tom:
Thanks for the info. If the connections for the Magnaflow 50004 are 2", I'm sure my muffler guy can make the transition. Do you think there will be any problems with the O2 sensor. How have you been? Hope things are going well for you. Saw your website. Wish I were close enough to give you some business.

PreCats

The oxygen sensors are mounted just a touch over 4" in front of the precats and the precats are 11.5" long. There should be no problems with sensors or mounting as long as the replacement precat is 14" long or less. You might even fit a 15" replacement.

Quick question: What did you do for a flex point in the exhaust? The stock exhaust has the spring bolt flanges on the main cat. I was thinking of putting in a peice of flexible tubing behind the main cat for mine.

Also, I ordered my 94007 yesterday, but the local guys can't get the 50004's except by special order from Summit Racing, and they're back-ordered to mid June.

No flange. I had a bracket welded under the Y-section for support. It's not moving anywhere.
