Okay let me ask a silly question as I have no clue (????)
How logical is it to have an L version and transform it into AWD instead of a FWD? I have a AWD version at hand. Can this be done?

Its been done. I can't remember who has done it. Not too sure about wiring, but you will need AWD.....trans,tcm,rear subframe, axles, differential, driveshaft and misc. hardware.

I have a 1992 svx LSL in my barn and like the looks of another svx; however its an L model and well its missing the options that I love about the LSL models. My husband said just make the L version go faster but I love the corners with the AWD. I live in an area with tons of corners and well I do love to play when I can...

May wanna see tomsSVX on a manual swap. I had planned on making my L an AWD car, but I decided against it. If you plan on keeping the auto, itll be hard as heckolabarstoolsampleaseahorse...Sorry..Hard as anything to get the wiring right. The fwd tranny doesnt have a sol.C...doesnt need one. The wiring harness for fwd cars doent have the wires for it neither, eleminating the whole plug and go thing. a manual tranny eliminates the need for custom wiring, but now you need custom everything else.
To make things more lack-lustre...Now you have a car that is, in esscence, a good awd subaru..But it sure as hell isnt an svx without all the otherwise unnoted cool features like titanium tinted glass, speed sensitive power steering, a stereo with 6 speakers (L has 4..tweeters are just dummy grills) or antilock brakes and power belts....or a sunroof (Though the non sunroof headliner is hella cool looking) And at that point you have cloth seats, crappy-wrapped steering wheel and solid state rubberlike shifter and e-brake handle...Did I say Hella? Man im a nerd. Anyhow, not like Im trying to talk you out of it or anything. If the L is in really good shape, why not, right? I've seen some really REALLY nice clean L models (Coming to mind are Chike's and MikeCG's cars, as well as some west coaster selling a polo green L a while back)

Not all L models are FWD either, if the car your looking at has the added Active Safety Group option, then it is indeed AWD and has ABS but not the other cool LS-L/LSi features.

It can be done but it isn't as easy as putting a different tranny in.

I did not do it myself. I had TomsSvx do it for me. It does require swapping out the rear subframe with one from an AWD. But other than that it isnt anymore work than a standard auto to manual conversion. Tom's shop is in Philly now. If he isnt busy I imagine he could do it in less than about 2 weeks if all the parts are on hand. Mine took about 2 months I believe, but the majority of that time was spend getting the parts. I wanted a 6-speed and they werent easy to come by without paying a fortune. A 5-speed WRX tranny swap would be eaaier to get the parts for, and I have a parts car in Delaware that all the rearend parts could be used from. It's about 1.5 hours from Toms shop. |
