Question abs has gone loco!!

when i'm coming to a stop and get to about 2 or 3 mph my left front brake pulses till i stop. it also seems to kick my already suffering tranny into neutral while it's happening and i can't imagine it being good for it. (it already has a bad line pressure solenoid) it happens probally 98% of the time and it really sucks. i pulled the fuse for the abs solenoid so it's all good for now, but i'd like to fix it. any advice would be good. how hard is it to replace the solenoid in the tranny?? need to know so i can decide whether to deal with it myself or not.thanx

Significant Technical Input
Is your LF tire flat or a different size than the other tires? If the ABS detects that it is turning slower than the other wheels it will begin pulsing that brake.

It doesn't pulse while braking at higher speeds? If it was I would have thought maybe the tone wheel.

It may be a wheel speed sensor going south, not generating a pulse at slower speeds. Check your ABS codes to see if it shows an error. After that the only good test is with a graphing meter.

Agreed. A failing sensor (or even one that is just dirty) can cause ABS activation at low speeds. My 92 had the same symptoms. Sometimes it threw an ABS code, sometimes not. A new wheel sensor cured the problem.

Its a magnetic pick up and its output depends on the speed that the tone wheel passes it. As the magnet weakens, with age, the output at lower speeds is too weak, So the ABS thinks its stopped, (wheel locked up). As the speed is increased the signal becomes stronger, to work ok.
Just need to find which one.

Harvey.

My SVX did this right after I got it. I actually never got around to fixing it, I just pulled the fuse for the ABS. My ABS doesn't work, but I have yet to be in a situation where i've needed it. At least it stopped the brakes from going nuts every time I stopped!
