i didnt have a wrench big enough to do that so i drove it very carefully back to work and it made there without a hitch...but i dont want to really drive it anymore...it did seem to not hit as much at some rpms though

You cant tighten it. It's not the pulley itself that becomes loose, but the rubber bushing thing in the pulley separates so the outer ring of the pulley becomes loose, and the inner part stays put. You'll need to replace the pulley if that is, indeed, what your problem is. If it's actually loose from the crank, that's a whole other issue.

Re: need help ASAP :(

So I finally went to replace the crank pulley and it didnt need to be done it turns out it was just extremely loose...i took the belt off and it moved back and forth about 1/4 of inch...now what would make it become so loose?

Look at the woodruff key that holds the pulley in position on the crank and see whether it was damaged. If the pulley you got looks to be in better shape then swap it anyway.

Every time someone needs to change a crank pulley Harvey suggests some loctite stuff to put between the key and the keyway. Search and find out the kind of loctite and in your case I would definitely take the suggestion and use it so that the pulley doesn't have any play back and forth against the key. That might be why the bolt worked its way loose. And torque the bolt exactly to spec. I think the bolt is a 22mm head.

Re: need help ASAP :(

it was a 22mm...i didnt have a torque wrench and i was by myself so i tightened til the engine started to turn then i held the pulley and tried to tighten it as much as i could until it turned again...i dont know if that is good or bad...it was a 1/2 drive though if that helps

oh and mine was in slightly better shape

Re: need help ASAP :(

It is not tight enough it does not take that much to turn the engine over.
there is a slot at the rear of the engine right in front of where the Trans connects you can put a heavy screw driver in to keep the engine from spinning it takes about 140 foot pounds i think

Re: need help ASAP :(

Blue or green lock tight do not use RED . Blue is common and the green is harder to find. Green is a gap filler, blue is a semi hard and red is
" I don't want to ever take it off with out a torch "
Do what you want but think before ever using red. This is 38 years
Of experience talking.

Re: need help ASAP :(

Conn ok

I mean it is pretty tight when I was holding the pulley still so that the engine wouldn't turn and tightening it I hurt the armi was tightening with.... I put most of my 220 on that 1/2 drive and was barely able to move it anymore...the engine didnt turn while I was doing this either... I had a real good grip on it

I would use a large break-over bar and a mauler or a long box end wrench with a mauler to tighten that big old bolt. Not only would I, but I do. You are not going to twist that bolt off.

I learned my lesson with a 90 legacy wagon that to keep the warranty intact I had to have periodic maintenance and one required a timing belt replacement. Of course, The dealer had to do it... the big bucks people.

A few months later a "Ticking sound" developed. The pulley worked loose and damaged the key-way.

Being "cursed" with a logical mind, I decided that if I tightened the bolt enough... it would never come off again. Big old box-end wrench, or a break-over bar, and big old mauler! Makes sense to me.

Sorry about your situation

Keith

Sorry, but using a 1/2 inch drive for that job is borderline laughable.
