Where does the fuse go?

This is a follow- up to my question about relays (which I can't find now) but if I'm installing a 12v accessory with a relay (extra cooling fan- not on an SVX) which line does the fuse go in- the lower current 12 line to the relay, or the higher-current 12v line to the fan itself? It's a 30/40a relay and I was going to use a 20a fuse just to be safe. Thanks!
