Just to be clear John is not sick, in the traditional sense
He did have knee surgery, complicated somehow by his recent workout in a van with an open sunroof? Get well soon, John.

Here are the details. Last Reading everything was fine. Bounced around like a crazy man from dawn until the wee hours of the morning. Into the summer, it was the same; gardening, cycling, etc. Developed swollen left knee in September. Failed arthroscopic Surgery to repair torn meniscus. Swelling did not go down, pain and mobility levels did not improve, but worsened. Needed a cane to get around and could not drive more than 15 minutes at a time. No detailing, polishing or Dremeling.  After much more testing, CAT scans and comprehensive x-rays, a reknowned orthopedic surgeon deterrmined my left knee was totally shot due to arthritis. Nothing but bone-on bone left with cartilage long gone. So today (March 5) I had a total left knee replacement. So far, no pain or meds and am getting state-of- the-art care at Union Memorial Hospital. I expect to be in here until the weekend. Scheduled for PT and other activities beginning tomorrow morning. Can't believe this all happened in 9 months. Something like having perfectly functioning brakes one moment and then you the low pad indicator, warning you the brakes are almost gone, the next. There is no way to visually inspect.the other knee. Don' t know about driving or other restrictions restrictions yet. Lots of physical therapy ahead. That is why I am not fully committed to Reading this year. Three days of activities may be more abuse than I should take. Reading is not a sit-down, spectator sport. My wife offered to drive me in the Outback and spend a couple of nights there. I am sure the outlets and specialty stores will keep her occupied during the day. She would also want me to do everything in moderation. Besides home PT three times a week, I have been offered the use of a Segway to get around my property, which should be an interesting experience Later evaluations will ascertain if the right knee is destinued to develop the same failure. i am in very good spirits now. No pain or other associated problems at the moment. Thanks so much for the expressions of sympathy and encouragement. .

You have motivated me to go see a surgeon about my knee. Basketball season is almost over and I am about 14 years too late to get this knee taken care of.
