Wheel bearing press out
What is the best method of getting bearings out of hub assembly? I tried to press them out with a 12 ton machine at a friends house and they didn't budge... At all! I even fabricated a piece of aluminum on a lathe so that only the outer race of the bearing would be in contact when pressing. Needless to say I couldn't believe this didn't work. What am I doing wrong?

Re: Wheel bearing press out
"Did you remove the hub first?
Did you remove the snap ring?"

Re: Wheel bearing press out
The illustration I went by had me under the impression that the hub would just fall off when pressing the bearing.
There was no snap ring once I got in there nor any trace of one ever being there. |

Re: Wheel bearing press out
You have to remove the hub,
remove the outer seal, and then remove the snap ring, before you can press out the bearing.

Re: Wheel bearing press out
I, for one, was unable to get one of the bearings out of my blue car with a hub tamer. If I had tried any harder I would have probably destroyed the hub tamer.
I will look and see if I have pics of the process so you can see the snap ring Tom is talking about. For now (when it's all still on the car), it is toward the outside of the bearing (meaning that if it's the left bearing, it's to the left of the bearing), inside the cylinder thingy (unsure of proper terminology) that the bearing is pressed into, and you should be able to get it out with a pair of pliers. When you press the bearing out, the bearing should be moving toward the outside relative to the car as well.

These were the Schematics I was going by which neglected detail on removing the hub. So How is that done? Sorry if it's a stupid question. |

Re: Wheel bearing press out
Number 22 on page 6 is the snap ring. Make sure to remove that. For the hub, just gently tap it out from the other side with a mallet or something. Mine was kind of stubborn so I put a pipe against it on the inside, and hit the end of the pipe with a hammer until it steadily popped out. The "bearing separator" on page 7 will definitely come in handy.
The E-brake is an absolute ***** to put back together, make sure to have at least 1 extra pair of hands to help you out. In the dark, with a buddy who also does not know what he's doing and a crappy flashlight, it was not enjoyable. That is a damn thorough guide, I will be saving it for my records.

Ok, I will try this out first thing in the a.m. The E-brake is an absolute ***** to put back together, make sure to have at least 1 extra pair of hands to help you out. In the dark, with a buddy who also does not know what he's doing and a crappy flashlight, it was not enjoyable. yea I kind of imagined it would be. I took picks and kept it consolidated disassembled, and will for sure have a hand. Can't imagine doing that in the dark! (bows) |

Bearing.jpg
I'm at a stand still. I can't press this bearing out because of the knuckle lip. What to do? |

Re: Wheel bearing press out
You're supposed to press it out in the other direction, after the snap ring is removed. Flip it over and look at the other side.

Re: Wheel bearing press out
it looks to me like you separated the inner and outer bearings and that lip is part of the outer race. you should be able to push the entire housing out. bearing assemblies are generally two separate bearings in one housing, an inner bearing and an outer bearing. i may be looking at the picture wrong but it looks like that lip is the divide between the two bearings and not part of the knuckle.
