Re: No kidding, what is the top speed of a stock SVX?

93 on 5 and a half cylinders.

67 on 4 cylinders and no oil and no coolant.

don't know how fast it is now, since it hasn't run long enough to try.

Anyways, definitely more than 136 or 143.

It is hard to work with "another 10 easily" other than to say that he would join the club of claiming the top speed is in the 150s. Also, peak HP occurs at 158MPH so he should have said "another 10, max".

Re: No kidding, what is the top speed of a stock SVX?

According to my speedometer the most my stock 92 could do was 144mph...definitely not a shining example. Sad was the fact that at 125mph (shift to 4th) it stopped accelerating. Keeping the shifter in 3rd forced the shift at 130mph and then it was able to climb to the top speed.

After putting in the 5spd I saw 155mph. I figure I was probably around 152-153 realistically based on GPS readings and odometer checks making my speedometer approximately 1.5% faster than actual.

What is very interesting about your numbers is that they are self-consistent. If you hit about 143MPH (accounting for a slightly higher speedo reading) with the stock tranny you would be exactly in line with the often quoted top speed. At the RPMs for 143MPH, the approximate HP is 215. If you then scale the HP up to the peak of 230HP and you scale the HP up again by 15% to account for the more efficient manual transmission, one would estimate the top speed to be 153MPH which is about what you saw.

Some engines and trannies may be a little more or a little less efficient but your numbers give a lot of credibility to that 143MPH stock number that has been bounced around. I just wish I knew where that number originally came from. A road test in one of the car magazines? Subaru? Some individual? One person claimed the original pamphlet from Subaru had 146MPH listed on it.

Re: No kidding, what is the top speed of a stock SVX?

http://djmixmo.com/R&T_Guide_to_the_Subaru_SVX.pdf

The Road and Track guide says "over 140" on page 59 and "est 143" on page 95.

I'll look at some of the other pamphlets and magazines I've got at home and see if any of them did a test.

If I go to the top of Omalley Road here and drive down the mountain while there's a chinook I bet I could peg the speedo easy.

Stopping would be another issue, entirely. I would probably stop very abruptly, and in more pieces than when I started.

Yes, probably, but not that much. Maybe if you hang onto them for a few years. I have most of those, but all of my collectible stuff came with my first SVX.

I think I hit VMax in a '76 Dodge Crew Cab with a 12ft trailer on that hill. I hated mowing the Hillside neighborhood when I worked for Tony's Enterprises.

My stepmom's Outback saw it's lifetime high speed (undisclosed) coming back over Turnagain Pass toward Girdwood. Some good roads up there.

As for the SVX, after a couple of spirited runs in it I think it's safe to say I'll never find the top speed in mine. It is still very solid and powerful at triple digit speeds, but 143 sounds like suicide in a twenty year old car.

I hate just driving up there if there's snow. I tried that a few times last year with my street tires, almost got stuck in someone's steep ass yard...

Needless to say I bought snow wheels and tires soon after.

Re: No kidding, what is the top speed of a stock SVX?

I met a guy that swore up and down that he hit 180 in his SVX. I didn't see any evidence of this, but he seemed convinced. ::shrug::
