If you do put a breather in you may need to do something like I had to do

Reason is I was getting gas fumes and it was coming in the vents I guess there wasnt enough vacuum with that line not connected to the old setup.

Re: A specific question about the old "dipstick popping out" issue

I have gotten a new PCV valve from Subaru, and now have the custom wrench to remove the old one (thanks Pearlm30). I have practiced the procedure using my spare intake manifold and have figured out how to remove it and how to replace it from above.
In the meantime it seems that my dipstick is no longer popping out after the new o-ring. I still think it would be a good idea to replace it since at 150K I don't believe it has ever been done. With that being said, I was wondering about the hose on it, it feels very hard and tight. Should it be like that? Also what is the best way to remove it without damaging it? Can the whole thing be removed and pulled off so that it is out of the way, where does the other end of this hose go?

Re: A specific question about the old "dipstick popping out" issue

The hose gets very dry and brittle, though not as bad as most of the vac lines. I used a needle nose pliers to carefully push it back off the pcv, then to pull it back onto the new one. it could still crack though.

it goes under the im and the tb to a connector that has 3 nipples on it, I have a pic of its location, but I have removed that connector and put a breather filter there.

Re: A specific question about the old "dipstick popping out" issue

Hey I have the PCV valve out. It was a lot easier than I thought to remove it. Does the new one just screw in or should there be a o-ring or something? The old one had a ring of something on it, could just be hardended crud but I wanted to check.

Re: A specific question about the old "dipstick popping out" issue

So, I managed to change mine. It took a long time to get the new one started, but overall was fairly easy. Definitely having the right tools helps with this job.

Here is the wrench that made removing it a snap. Thanks Pearlm30.

Here is the tool that I made to hold the PCV valve in positiion while I used my fingers to turn it. It reminds me of the tool they give you in the Paas brand Easter Egg coloring kit. It is actually a peg board hook, I just took it off the wall snapped off the support legs and bent and held the end with a long nose vise grip.

This is the old PCV valve not really clogged but not in great shape either.

Also this is the PCV vlaue I purchased from Autozone. I would not recommend going there. The old one turns about 8 times before it gets really tight. This one only went about 4, so it doesn't appear to me that the threads are quite right, even though they looked it up and said it was the right one. Anyhow I ended up buying one from the Subaru dealer it was $18 compared to the $3.50 one at Autozone.

You can see gunk around the bottom of the old one, I am not sure if this was once a gasket of sorts or just hardened dirt.

Re: A specific question about the old "dipstick popping out" issue

No gasket on the PCV valve. It's a pipe fitting, expanding threads. I'd guess the gunk on yours is either excess thread sealer or petrified motor oil.
