Subaru debuts 3rd gen Boxer

Quote:
Boxer lovers, the next chapter in your love affair has just begun. Fuji Heavy Industries, parent company of Subaru, has introduced the latest, third-generation boxer engine that will relieve the second-gen after 21 years of service. This is a brand new lump, not a rework, and FHI has built a factory just to produce it.

The displacement, bore and stroke have all been increased, and it will be available with four cylinders in 2.0- and 2.5-liter displacements. The intake ports have been redesigned, lighter pistons and connecting rods offer reduced internal friction, and separate cooling circuitry for the block and the head are some of the changes that have resulted in a lower emissions and a ten percent increase in fuel efficiency. No power figures are being quoted yet, so we'll have to see how it measures up when it finds its way into production engine bays.

This new boxer will be Subaru's primary engine, and will first be seen in the Forester.

Re: Subaru debuts 3rd gen Boxer

I saw an article about the engine several weeks back, chain drive. What is not known, but believed, is that the engine has close bore spacing like the 3.0L. Very interesting, thanks for posting the pic

Still 2.5L, bore and stroke changes are marginal.
If you want bigger bores, open up an EG33

Re: Subaru debuts 3rd gen Boxer

Does "separate cooling circuitry for the block and the head" = no head gasket failure worries?

So, it looks to me like there is one big serp belt on that engine. And what the heck is the huge pulley at the bottom near the exhaust?

Re: Subaru debuts 3rd gen Boxer

I bet it is the water pump, and the coolant changes have to do with emissions I would figure. It looks pretty standard as far as what everyone else has going on right now. I don't think it will have head gasket problems, hopefully it will be good about leaking oil, too.

One big serp on our 2010 outback 2.5 also.

externally driven water pump on a subaru? I hope the belt snapping triggers an engine shutdown.

Re: Subaru debuts 3rd gen Boxer

You don't want to have a water pump driven inside the timing chain cover. I think only GM is stupid enough to do something like that. It would leak coolant as it aged inside the timing cover and cause coolant in the oil. And the belt won't break if it is replaced regularly. Plus a bunch of lights would come on to let you know it did.

But I'll tell you what today's customer would notice: The a/c wouldn't work anymore.

This is a natural progression for them, and I am sure Toyota had a hand in it. I say it is natural because it really just looks like a modernized, scaled down EZ. I like that it has variable timing at each cam, and I bet the 2.5l will be good for close to 200 hp.

same place as on my ea81 BRAT. that engine is gear driven, no timing belt, no timing chain, so the only way to turn the waterpump is via belt. no problems, many BRATS get to the 400k mile mark on oil changes.

i like the looks of this and about time they get rid of the dreaded HG saga once again.

Even the EA82's and XT6 that had timing belts, used the accessory belt to turn the water pump.

Heh, forgot about it being a chain instead of belt. Makes sense then.

I guess it's been a while since I was under the hood of an EA82. Too many times under the svx hood has warped my memory.
