Citroen SM anyone?

I found one of these sitting in a barn collecting dust today... I'm tempted to try and get it, as I like my unique/weird cars (why I drive an SVX ) Anyone ever messed with one? It's got THE WEIRDEST front wheel drive setup I've ever seen, has triple Weber downdraft carbs on a Maserati V6 with a 5 speed manual.

Re: Citroen SM anyone?

they are very cool cars. I am more into the later ones of the 80's but these are great too. You are going to learn a whole new way of thinking if you get this car and have to work on it. Just remember it is in the barn for a reason.

Re: Citroen SM anyone?

An old french car with an Italian motor that hasn't been run or serviced in years. How hard/expensive could that be?

Re: Citroen SM anyone?

Go for it! Those cars are amazing.
I'm looking at a 1985 Merkur XR4Ti with under 50,000 miles as my next possible challenge. It's in an underground garage and has not been started in 4 years.

Re: Citroen SM anyone?

Citroen-Maserati, one of my friends have one late model, a very weird and rare machine, hydro-pneumatic suspension, the motor in front, gearbox in the back, brake disks in the gearbox...
I bet it has a collectible value.

I rest my case. Not worth the time or effort to fix up - you'll just be disappointing by the driving characteristics. Just get an older V6 accord, it'll be as much "fun" to drive, and a heck of alot cheaper to fix up...

Though I do concede that its a sweet looking car.

I'm willing to bet electrical or engine issues.

I had a 1988 Merkur with under 60k on it. I loved that car and should have never sold it. They are fun cars to drive and play with.

Re: Citroen SM anyone?

I always thought that the SVX was the "Citroen SM" of Japan.

It's low, sleek, overengineered, quirky, complex, somewhat powerful, comfortable, luxurious, etc.... and I'm speaking of both cars, the SVX and the Citroen.

Leno has one and here is a 10 minute video on his. He does the usual drive at the end. It is a classic, and nice ones on the market go for a good amount:

Leno's Citroen

Here is another Leno video on the Cibie designed turning headlight systems:

Leno's Citroen SM Update

Here's a shot I took at the Monterey Historics last August...

Re: Citroen SM anyone?

I've always had a yearning for the SM. There's a professor in town that drives one to work at the university. It might be worth it just to store it until know where to go next. I bet there's some club support for parts and maintenance.
Like every other classic, you could always convert it to a 350 Chevy power train.

Re: Citroen SM anyone?

Speaking of DS... that reminds me of a funny old 80s era movie...

"Is that your car, Kent? You know you aren't allowed to park that on campus..."
(as Kent's bright yellow DS is snoring on it's hydro-pneumatic suspension, with lights blinking, in kent's dorm room bed.)

"You must get even with Kent. It is a moral imperative!"

Great movie... anyone else remember that one?
