New Vehicle Safety Ratings

Interesting article about results. Of course Subaru does great with Ford and VW doing fine. Some not so good such as Toyota.

These ratings always made me wonder why Impreza WRX is specifically excluded from the "top pick" in a small car category. As far as I understand, it shares the frame with the base model - so it should have had essentially the same ratings in all types of crashes.

Is it just that the IIHS (which, after all, is INSURANCE institute for highway safety) dislikes WRXi and does not want to encourage people to buy them?

Regards,
Alexey.

Re: New Vehicle Safety Ratings

About this time of year, way back when, Rosie totaled her '96 Outback wagon. It was a wreck. The enginge (2.5L) was pushed down and back about 4 inches but it was still running and not leaking gas. The firewall welds were cracked. The front and back windows were gone. The passenger compartment was intact except for glass and air bags. Rosie walked away without a scratch. She was mad that she cracked a fingernail, and I thanked God that that was all. We got a '97 Outback in the same color as soon as the insurance money came in (about a month). We traded our '97 OB for her '2007 2.5XT OB, which is a turbo. The '07 doesn't get quite the mpg as the '97 did because I have a lead foot.

So they do engineer and build these cars well.

I don't know if the SVX is as safe, but I still love it and really enjoy driving it.

I don't think they would ever recommend the highest claim vehicle no matter how "safe" its crash tests are after all it is called the INSURANCE institute as you said and last I saw the WRX held that destinction. I guess you don't need to know how to drive if you buy one.
