Kind of Bummed about talk with Body Shop Tech

Took my car for an opinion on the small patch of rust behind the rear wheel, and was basically told that they can't really fix it. He said it was rusting from the inside out, from between the seams where the 2 panels of metal join together. According to him they could sand it down and paint it but not guarantee that it won't come back in 6 months.

Anyone else ever looked into repairing this area? Right now it looks fine, but I wish I could do something to prevent the area from getting worse.

Re: Kind of Bummed about talk with Body Shop Tech

I dunno...

at that point, I might consider some rust inhibitor chemicals that convert rust to a non-actively oxidizing compound, and then cover the area with an undercoating or something...

Eastwood and other car restoration suppliers may have some products for stabilizing and preventing further rust on non-replaceable parts.

I know my dad uses POR-15, and some stuff that was developed for the navy to prevent rust on ships, when he restored is sports car, and now his 40's era fire engine.

I would think there would be solutions otherwise....

If all else fails... with various parts cars around, perhaps see if you can get that section of bodywork cut off of another car, flanged for an under-lap, and welded into your car's surgically de-rusted fender... but that will take some work, and some skilled work at that, to lay a patch in there without warping and such... As the tech said... there isn't a nearby seam above or aft of that area, to blend a patch panel into.

Use some of that reversal primer. I forget the name, but it stops rust and turns existing rust to a hard finish. Iron men use it on I-beams when they are exposed to the environment.

Sean, bring it to The Pumpkin Carve so that Jerry or Ashley can take a look at it.
They both do GREAT work!

Heh, they'll really like mine then. Sean's is like baby rust compared to mine.

My car had very similar rust before I had it repainted. The shop cut out that section entirely and welded in new metal.

I would Tom, but my wife is working both days that weekend which means I've got the kids. I do want to come down pretty soon though, I'm tired of seeing that CEL for the EGR.

I guess that is the way to do it. Must have been pretty expensive.

That will work? If I take these instructions to shop do you think they would be able to do this? By the way how far are you from Harrisburg?

Are you welding in a new section from a rust free donor car, or some other way?

From an exterior point of view you wont need to cut from a donar car. I dont know what goodness is brewing under that mess though...it does not look as bad as this..i had to cut a whole quarter from a donar.

At this point with my car the rust is so bad that my only route in complete replacement of the quarter panel with a new one. Fortunately they're only $300 or so each. I'm also going to have to rebuild the inner wheel wells a bit.
