Security Systems?
Debating on purchasing a security system for the svx, however, not sure which brand to go with...black widow? Viper? Avital? They all seem to offer the same features. Anyone know which is best? For those who have security systems other than the stock system, what do you have? thanks,Chris

What's wrong with the stock system?

Re: Security Systems?
Security systems are a waste of time. Get an agreed price and a low comp deductible from your insurance company.

Re: Security Systems?
Zandar, to completely dismiss the use and benefits of automotive security systems seems a bit rash and ignorant, in my opinion. Although, I do see where you are coming from, probably in the mindset, if someone really wants to steal your car, no security system is going to deter them. At the very least its worth a discussion as to the advantages and disadvantages of competing systems out today. Also, if simply relying on your insurance company, that's the wrong way to go about it. These cars are so rare and undervalued compounded with the high replacement cost of parts, the insurance company would more than likely total the car and then you would be really out of luck.
But having said that, I do think a security system would be beneifical, if for nothing else having the piece of mind that your vehicle has some sort of protection. The stock system doesn't offer much security in terms of today's security system offerings. From what I can tell, other than keyless entry and an alarm there are no other security features offered by the stock system. Whereas all the other security system companies, previously mentioned, offer the same features and in addition, provide 2 way communication (meaning the vehicle notifies the owner of any sort of intrusion), failsafe starter kill, and other features of which I am still researching. Re: Security Systems?
A security system is good for deterring a casual thief; nothing more. For a professional, your only choices are good insurance or something like Lo-Jack.
Just my $0.02, but I used to work in insurance claims and had to deal with thefts all the time. If someone wants your car, and they know what they're doing, they'll get it. It's better to plan for the theft than try to prevent it (since prevention methods are pretty moot against a pro). That being said, a security system certainly doesn't hurt anything (except maybe your wallet ).

Re: Security Systems?
I'm pretty sure our stock security system has an ignition kill switch or something of the sort when it detects an intrusion..
I would just upgrade my stock system.... Put a putbull in your car..

Re: Security Systems?
The fact that our cars are so rare also serves as a "deterrent" in a way...
Our community is small and close knit. Majority of the cars are documented and are kept track of by Earl (if you haven't reported your car to him... you should)... so if some jerk goes out and starts stealing SVXs it will be fairly easy to track him down... and then... well... justice will be served. Now, the scenario zandar is completely throwing out of the discussion is whether someone tries to steal something from the inside of the car not the car itself... whether it be a GPS, your audio deck... or whatever else valuable... In this case our security systems are awful at notifying us (the owners) of something happening whether it be by the alarm going off (which is out dated) or the absence of a pager notifying you that an intrusion of some sort is occuring... I personally have been looking at Viper security systems... but I never concluded my research due to other projects taking precedent. Respeck, -Sov13t.

Re: Security Systems?
I have the most annoying alarm in the world, but it has paid off a few times.
I have the Viper 791xv, which has now been superceded by the 5900 SST with 1 mile range. It's the 2 way remote start/paging alarm with standard shock sensor. I also have the proximity sensor and glass break sensor added onto it. I may have gone a little overboard, but now I know if people get too close to my car or if people walk up my driveway. It already has thwarted people hanging around it, and it allows me to leave my window open in the summer while I'm around the house. As everyone else concluded, a real professional would be able to get in. But by having taken the necessary precautions, many of the smash and grabs can be prevented, and it's pretty easy to do so with the hideaway stereo cage. Just like a stereo setup, the most important thing is not the components, but the proper time and prep set aside for the install. Kill switches, dummy alarm boxes, carefully wired alarm brain and separate battery backup devices can be used for those who are really uptight about security. Luckily for us, it's pretty rare for someone to steal our car as a whole.

Re: Security Systems?
Its kinda funny, I had a $2000+ stereo system in my Cutlass and had my amps laid out where the back seat was and never once had a break in or attempt. I guess maybe I was just lucky for over 2 years

Re: Security Systems?
Except that is a BOXER not a pit bull.... Learn your dog breeds! I know nobody was badmouthing the breed, etc, so I'm not mad or anything, but go check out www.understand-a-bull.com and try the "spot the pit bull" page, you'll be surprised. Even our dog wasn't actually a "pit bull" even though he looked very similar, he was actually an American Staffordshire Terrier (and they are NOT the same thing - pits are stockier and have a bigger head.)
And Scooter never crapped in my car, but he was a good security system.. He'd usually sit in the driver's seat and look out the window for a while, but then he'd usually curl up and go to sleep (Still enough of a deterrent, even though he would have just licked the face off of anyone who tried to get in lol). I still have muddy paw prints in my car from the last time he was in there
