Re: Happyness is a car that...
tell me you aren't using the "toilet paper filter". I saw this poor excuse of a sales pitch years ago.

Re: Happyness is a car that...
No.... the VR6 is an 'insert' filter.... it doesn't come in a can like most.... it's kind of a pain but is actually really clever on the design side... the drain plug is in the bottom of the cap that holds it in....
it is the engine that takes the particular size so going somewhere to get an oil change means you add $15 to the price..... so I get the $6 one at the parts store.... |

Re: Happyness is a car that...
still on my "change filter only" after 12,000 and 4 filters, (3000 miles each) synthetic oil looks really good!

Re: Happyness is a car that...
Glad I am not the only one that remembers those things.
Is the VR6 oil filter the same setup that the TDi has too? I never changed the oil in my TDi....I just ended up selling it after 4k miles

Re: Happyness is a car that...
The FIRST oilfilters for passenger cars were aftermarket and used... toilet paper as thier filtering medium.

They were really thrifty! And "used" toilet paper as their filtering medium? Not sure about the timing, but I would probably just put "new" toilet paper in my oil filter. On second thought, In our "out house" we would have had to borrow the sears catalog and find out a way to use it in the filter contraption. I suppose that "used toilet paper thing" was the first example of "Recycling"? Interesting... Keith |

Re: Happyness is a car that...
I fear a Subaru that leaks no oil must displease the Subaru gods.

Re: Happyness is a car that...
Similar.... the TDI filter is a little better than three times longer and sort of mounted to the side instead of the bottom.... That one is actually weird because it's mounted to the side, yet it's still vertically oriented....

A couple bits of advice though, if you want to change plugs at the same time, it's far easier to do with the valve covers out (just be careful not to pull any dirt into the open heads). Also, at the rear of the valve covers there are two half-moon seals. These don't come with the kit and you will have to find some seperately, either through Subaru (P/N 11051AA070, $18.44 for 4) or from a seperate company. I got mine from a gasket store and paid $8.50 for the set. The old ones had become so brittle that they shattered when I tried to use pliers to pull them out. Seal those in with silicon. Other than that, not much. Oh, the seal kit doesn't come with a thermostat gasket. Get one of those as well if you plan on doing the thermostat. (might as well, you've got everything apart and it's only $10 or something.)
