Question Question about the kick-down solenoid?

OK im putting in a 4.44 tranny into my car and i have a question about the kick-down solenoid... what is it, i mean i know what it does, but what is it physicaly? and would it be possible to wire a potentiometer into it so i could adjust it from inside the car? say turn it down to kick-down real easy for racing, and turn it up to kick-down less for highway and hill climbing? it would be cool if i could but if not.....

Greetings Tom,

There is no such thing. The TPS (Throttle Position Sensor) provides the initial signal to to the ECU (Engine Control Unit) and the TCU (Transmission Control Unit). If you are going to go racing you have a selector to play with. Does not the OEM kick down work real easy.

I think some older autos had a switch (not a solenoid) under the pedal, but the SVX doesn't.

The gear is selected on the basis of Throttle and Speed. The best way to adjust it is by reprogramming the chip in the TCU. But nobody knows how to do that yet. Unless you're a computer geek then you're out of luck.

Another option would be to try and fool the system by putting a potentiometer between the TPS and the TCU. So it thinks the thottle is more or less open than it really is. But to be honest you are probably going create a whole load of drivability issues.

Just install a power mode switch and you will be happy enough.
