Its pretty easy. When you park the car leave it in gear (the shifter is in the way in park) and pull the emergency brake. Pop out the ashtray and there is a plastic frame around the whole console with 2 small screws underneath it and I think you have to take the door off too, but I don't remember. But if you have some diff size screwdrivers and just poke around a bit you'll figure it out

The link Svxcess posted is spot on. All the color codes for the wires are exactly right. Some artard cut my connector off for the stereo so I had to match everything up. It's pretty easy to remove just be careful to not scratch anything. And make sure you slide the cardboard in the sides when pulling it out, otherwise it gets stuck on the trim.

One thing to be careful of selecting after market speakers, is the type with the coax tweeters mounted above the level of the speaker, as these will interfere with the factory grilles. The grilles can be forced over them as they have some flex, but the speaker will vibrate/resonate the grilles and panels at certain frequencies.

I wouldn't rag on the previous owner too much. Up until I started selling harnesses a few years back, none existed so a "hard wire" install was the only option.

I do also have the "reverse" harness, if you want to restore the factory plug
