Question Different steering wheel

so it seems like everytime i see a video of the svx or something when it was being roadtested back in the day (primarily for foreign mags) it appears to have a different steering wheel than the ones we get here in the U.S.? I think i primarily noticed it in australian publications and such but i dunno, i just like the look of that wheel a whole helluva lot better than the stock wheel i have, i doubt i could get that other one but i was just curious why we didn't get it, is it because it couldn't fit an airbag, so they had to give us the fatty wheel, or what? i'd prefer to keep the airbag and wheel-mounted cruise controls, but i just wanted to know about this other steering wheel.

yup. that's the one.

to me it just looks so much better, i'm not sure what exactly makes it better but it just does.

i recall one that was two-tone silver/charcoal but the same design, looks very nice and even a little racy.

I must be retarded because i went out to my car, looked at the wheel, and discovered that, aside from what appear to audio controls on it (and a better subaru logo) it's essentially the same design haha

but it just looks so much better here, and i wanna look for that two-toner cuz that was just plain sexy lol

guess it's not as ground breaking as my memory made it seem haha

having steering wheel audio controls would definitely be easier than fishing ur finger around the stock cd player and always hitting "stop" when you meant to skip to the next track. and when there's sunglare coming in, boy, you can forget trying to find those buttons at all.

i had a buddy who's dad had an aftermarket system in his old mx-6, and with minimal wiring he had a nifty set of steering mounted audio controls that he bought in conjunction with the system, they didn't look great, but their functionality totally overcame that. Anybody know of some similar system possibilities in the svx short of going and buying that nifty looking wheel?

How about buying a deck with a remote.

I had that wheel on my first SVX. The volume control & mute were handy, but that's about all I used it for.

The UK ones all come with airbags, so never seem to have that particular wheel.

well i know the remote would work but i was more interested in having some kind of steering wheel mount or something, aside from attaching the remote to the wheel and feeling a little ridiculous i think it would sorta be a little bit of a distraction, if that were the case i might as well use an ipod adapter and operate everything thru my ipod *shrug*

i dunno, i'm not trying to be snappy or anything, i was just curious.

so the wheel in that pic doesn't have an airbag in it then?

Is there an adapter to put an aftermarket steering wheel on an SVX? I'm about to buy a car that's been ditched hard enough to set off the airbags. I can't really afford to replace the bags, and really I prefer NOT to have them, as I wear my seatbelts religiously.

No.

There is a horn push in the centre. You actually have to push this quite hard to get the horn to work, a feature I did not like.

hmmm yeah i guess i'll have to pass on searching for the wheel then, i'm not a real fan of center-horns, just like in the movies, if u rest your elbow on'em...*HONK*

oh well, i can't really afford any mods for the car right now anyway, i'm basically broke having simply bought it and done the title transfer, but when the time comes, hopefully there will be some attractive options

How about the wheel from an STi?

I am not a fan of bloated early '90s airbag wheels, and I've got them on all three of my cars. There's really no hope for the Alfa and the Capri, those are the wheels they all came with. But what about the really handsome Momo wheel that is offered on the WRX. Now that would look great, if it would work. It would be legal, too, since it has an airbag. (I have been against airbags since they first came out, basically because I have been using seat belts, and three-point seat belts, since the '60s. I don't like driving with a blank shotgun shell pointed at my face.)

that's a pretty intriguing idea, and a pretty disconcerting visualization (the black shell metaphor, yikes!)

I mean granted they're meant to help but they can do some nasty things too, i'm all about the belts. (not those awful electric mouse belts though )

Full rally or race harness is the only really "safe" seatbelt. The three point does not hold you in place.

Airbags are safer, statistics are there to show it. However I do agree Paul they may not be such good news for really short people or anybody whose sitting style has them too close to the wheel.

Used properly they are a life saver, and that is the bottom line.

Joe
