Forester with a grinding wheel. Any ideas?

Hey guys, I thought I'd put this question to you.

My dad's '03 Forester XS has a god awful grinding sound coming from the right front wheel under braking. While braking there's a loud rough grind, then a pause, then another grind, twice per wheel rotation. Brakes you say? The dealer said that too. All 4 wheels got new pads and rotors. The problem went away, only to return within a few months.

I haven't had the wheel apart to see what it is. I'm thinking maybe the caliper is hitting on something, and only hits when it's slid out because of the piston pushing on the rotor. I haven't had the wheel off yet to check thoroughly, but I'll do that soon.

Another peice of the puzzle: This only happens going forward. I can reverse the car at a good speed and hit the brakes and no noise, no matter how hard I brake.

I should add that this car once took damage to that wheel. I kind of hammered a curb and bent a bunch of things up, in my wild and crazy youth (all of 3 years ago). The rim was replaced, along with some suspension components.

Any thoughts?

Sounds like a gravel is stuck between the rotor and the dust shield....not uncommon if you drive on many gravel roads...Or maybe the dust shield is bent a little hitting the rotor...
