I was on a 300zx forums last week and I recall a guy that worked at a body shop claiming they had used is successfully on several occasions.

My guess would be as this:

When warm, things expand, when cold, they contract. If you place ice over the dent, the surrounding metal would shrink, and pull itself out.

You put the dry ice into the dent until the surrounding area freezes this contracts the metal to almost its original shape. Apparently dry ice is much colder than the canned air stuff.

I know that liquid oxygen will cause the paint to peel off, but that's about -300* f.

Dry ice is only -109.3F, while liquid oxygen is -297.4, pretty big difference. I think the paint can upside down would only be at -60ish, which might do it, if you could sustain the temperature. The problem is, it warms up to quickly, whereas dry ice can last for quite a bit.

Significant Technical Input Registered SVX Classic SVX
Many, many years ago in Arizona, I watched this old bodywork technican do something similar.

The car had the same type hail damage in the hood. He parked it out in the summer sun all day and the hood (which was navy blue) got really hot. He then placed an ice cube on the center of each dimple and let it set.

It didn't take too long before some of the dimples popped out, flipping the ice cube into the air. They all didn't respond to this equally, but the theory and effect are the same.

It sounds like we have some members here that could try this for us.

And if it works, all we have to do is turn our SVXs on their side to repair the door dings.

Im going to look for some dry ice on saturday. I think some welding supply stores carry it for metalwork. Now it just needs to warm up so I can try this, been in the 40s for the high around here so it will be sometime next week. I'll see how it works out and let you know.
