Thumbs down this car has to be worth all the trouble i go through

So we get my car back from another bout with the mechanics at subaru.. they say that they are pretty sure i have a cylinder misfiring and it should cost 800-1200 dollars, this is causing my car to have a rough idle, less than idea acceleration, to heat up inside very quickly due to the exhaust heating up due to gasoline collecting in the exhaust after its not being used by the misfiring cylinder head, my gas mileage is at an all time low, i got 45 miles out of a quarter tank... ... none the less with gas prices at 2.85 ... but i dont know if this car is worht me fixing and im thinking i might wanna sell it to a member of the forums, but i am gonna get a second opinion its so rough to decide.. damn 92's with 87k

Do they know why the cylinder is misfiring? Did they tell you what they are going to do for that 800-1200 dollars?

Definitely get a second opinion before you decide what to do.

The cars are worth the trouble we go through. We all have a reality check sometimes, where we think "Why am I spending $$$$ fixing up a 14 year old car?" but then we think "Hey my beloved SVX is worth it".

Owning an SVX is a hobby. It makes no rational sense but we enjoy it. Some people spend all their time and money on golf or fishing. We spend ours driving, or more often than not fixing, our SVXes.

Owning more than one SVX however is the path to insanity and financial ruin. J/K.

I would agree that you need a second opinion. There are many reasons why the car would have that problem and unless you know what they are going to do for that amount of money, I would not want to spend it either.

we can help you out and it will not cost $800 to do it. Follow a few simple instructions and you will find your troublesome cylinder and we can get you parts to fix it. Not that difficult and will prove to be much more easy to afford

the worst would be if they do "fix" it and it wasn't that. it was something else

yeah i really do wanna keep it... they didnt really give us a written out answer what was going wrong, this subaru dealership is so shady around here, so we are taking it to another one just to see what they think.. I also think that the fact that the dealership unloaded all their subarus and changed to a full on Nissan dealership might have something to do with it.. maybe if i gave some more symptoms of the engine it might help..

- Cannot leave it idle, it stalls after a while

- Interior gets very hot while driving

- When going from stationary to go positions, the car hesitates throughout the first gear

-When the accelerator is lightly pressed, the engine hesitates, so I have to mash it to get any acceleration

- The exhaust sounds like a dying lawnmower

- After replacing the ECU, MAF, O2 sensors these problems are still there...

- My car was pretty normal when I first got it back in early october, then one day after leaving work it started acting like this

i really would like to keep this car, but if i cannot fix it then i would like to sell it to someone who knows these cars so that i know it would be in a good home : )

looks really nice
well get the second opinion and think about it yourself.
i mean...i bought a "fixer" ..and i knew it.
bought the car last july (13) and only been on the road since end of last august. so from there to now, i've spent $16 000 -$17 000 already...fixing it...a lot of seized parts... i figure another $10 000 should fix up the car. hopefully.
it's a lot of money...but it's a car that i'm not looking to keep around a couple of years to trade in and buy a new car.
give it some thought...see the possiblities of everything and not just what is going on now with your car.

Ok, #1 is to find out which cylinder is causing a problem.

TO do this, let the car idle. WHile it is idling pull the plugs off of the injectors one at a time. By pulling the plug, the car should run worse. If it does, thats not the cylinder you need to worry about. If the idle stays the same, take note of which one it is and move onto the next. This should help find the origin of the miss. Once it is found try checking the spark plugs to be sure they are good. If it is good, check the coilpack. If the coilpack is good, check the injector to see if it is clogged or broken. These should be you main 3 sources for a miss.

question.. is this a safe practice for someone to do who has almost no mechanical knowledge haha.. my stepdad works on his engine alot but we have no knowledge of the H-6 whatsoever, dont you have to take off the manifold to access the sparkplugs?

short answer yes its alot safer then what I do when I am checking for a missfire on a car with ingnition wires (wakes you up better then the coffee at my place )... they are pretty easy to spot and pulling them off will at the worst cause the car to stall... just make sure you pull from the harness and not the wire...
The cylender that is missfiring will not cause the car to run any worse when you pull the harness from the injector

The svx...... to own one for a long time you better either be handy with tools or have some spare cash for when it breaks. The newest models are now 8 years old!
They are easy to work on and the knowledge here can get you through most repairs but if you take it somewhere to be worked on you usually get robbed.

You might want to go ahead and let this be the one that got away. It is a very nice looking silver you have there.

oh yeah - and your wheels are on backwards
