Heh, heh... It's got four-bolt mains.

I want to know how they make those parts. Ain't many forged pieces in that assembly. ...and that crank. Is it one piece? Do you cast that? Egad.

I love the cylinder placement: 1, 2, 3, 4, jack gear, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10

Check out that wussy starter motor.

I had one of those puppies installed on my old Nissan. She could burn rubber at 15rpm but feeding the maintenance elves got too expensive so I sold the car.

Big boat engine.

Yes thats a turbo charged two stroke, you can see the inlet ports along the side. They are built into the ship as it is being built, along with spare pistons and sleeves. It is started with compressed air, the electric motor does'nt start it, it is used when the ship is in port, to keep the engine turning over, so the crank won't settle on the bearings and bend.

I knew somebody was going to correct me on that.

I think some of the diesel-electrics use the genset to start themselves. Now THAT's a starter motor. I'm pretty sure the above example doesn't. It takes a while to generate the air for some of those motors and it requires a whole other system of plumbing and junk, and for that reason I've heard that mechanical starters are becoming increasingly popular (and increasingly large.) ...not that large though. I wonder if the APU for that motor has it's own APU.

"What's the bore and stroke on that thing?"
"4x3.5"
"Inches?"
"No, meters"

You know you've got a big motor when you measure displacement in cubic yards.
