The CRX would have my vote. Been there done that with an 88 DX and daily commute of 232, yes, 232 miles per day, and that little scooter pulled 34-39mpg for the 15 months I endured it. Be ready to feel VULNERABLE though in a way I didn't in the early 90's, pre SUV/Truck boom.
Seriously though, do you really think that fuel prices are going to retreat any time soon??? Welcome to competition in the world economy. and hopefully some demonstration of sanity by the American buyer in months and years ahead.

Hold on. 700 miles a week? That's 36400 miles a year. That's crazy.

I'll sell you a CRX for a lot less than $500. It gets more strange and repulsed looks than it does mileage, but it gets a lot of looks so I think you'd come out ahead.

Personally, I'd drive the SVX. You own it, you might as well use it. Why own one otherwise? I don't know the details of what you'd be doing, but I think that having two cars to deal with could outweigh any savings in fuel. The more you drive, the more enjoyable the experience should be. If you only drive a mile a week, drive a beater. If you spend most of your waking life driving around, get the nicest car you can afford. There's a reason long-haul truckers tend to own luxurious tractors; they understand that philosophy. Of course, it doesn't usually cost them any extra per mile, but the underlying reason is the same.

If you really want good mileage, get a motorcycle.

thanks for the replies. yamaca's are fun.

i'd go with the scooter, skateboard, moped, motorcycle idea, but i'm not just going to and from Georgia State. it would be ideal if i was just a student and very convient to find parking , but then again we are talking about atlanta...the city where bikers are smashed into oblivion by soccer mom's and poor drivers. that's why i never bought a bike.

yeah i'm estimating worse case scenario i'd be travelling 700 miles/week. if i have to go out to that office that's 65-70 miles away, then round trip would be 130-140 miles plus the distance to and from GSU to my home which is ~10 miles.

an extra $40/week for gas for the svx isn't too terribly bad, but that's only if the gas prices stay constant (which i doubt). i figured maintenance for the honda would be cheaper than for the svx. i dunno, for a few hundred bucks, i figured it wouldn't be too bad. also from all the road construction and bullcrap gridlock traffic here, i don't want to expose my svx to incompetent drivers that love mating their vehicles with all sorts of objects, stationary or not.

if those xt4's really yield 30 mpg, i'd be really interested in one.

what's the mileage on those celica's matt? i saw a 4ws alltrac one on nasioc, but i'm sure the turbo put in won't give me the mileage i'm looking for...also the lack of A/C would make life difficult for 9 months out of the year.

edit: checked out the mileage for the celica. 25-32mpg for the 2.0L regular auto celica seems nice.

yeah i thought about that too. i missed out, a friend of mine bought a bmw 325 for $3k. 1995 in very good condition with about 130k miles on it. it's immaculate, 1 owner, no accidents and well maintained.

i know i'd be extremely pissed if something stupid were to happen to my svx and i really don't want to have to go searching for another anytime soon. besides, driving the chevy truck the same distance would really suck if something were to happen to my svx, so it's not a bad idea to have another beater. if i didn't give my camry to my mother, i'd have another beater, but since i don't have one, i want to be prepared. the toyota truck is much more comfortable than that damn chevy....and more reliable too.

It's the regular celica ST 2.0L mpfi automatic w/ OD. It does have AC but it needs a charge.

What is the mileage of your SVX now, what year?

Do you live close with your mom? Do you trust her driving? Use her camry for one week, let her use your svx. Use your svx for one week, then let her drive your svx or the van.

If you don't want jack up the mileage too much for the svx and worry about the maintenance, get an alternative car that you can afford. Want to save gas money? Get a new hybrid car, such as an insight or a prius. They're pretty good and low maintenance.

I think I also put more than 30,000miles a year....but I don't drive the svx alot....I don't want to jack up the miles.

naw she doesn't want to drive the svx anyway. that's why i'm looking for a beater, but i doubt i'd buy a hybrid car. too expensive for my tastes.

I disagree. A good friend of mine has a Prius. It has seen the inside of the service department a few times, once because 'the thing has a perfectly good internal combustion engine it refuses to use.'

I'm not sold on hybrids any more. I wish diesels didn't have the bad rep they do in the US - we'd all be getting the same mileage as (or better than) the hybrids, but without the complexity. And before you bring up VW, don't. Give me a break.

Harry, I'd go for the Toyota. A $500 car scares me for a 100mi commute. You know better, though - you've actually seen the cars.

Whatever you decide, the best AAA membership available should be figured into your costs. It varies by state, but usually you can get a package that'll include 75-100mi of towing per incident.

I also worry that this job will only support the car you need to get yourself to and from it.

Harry I average about 26ish mostly around town in my XT6 fwd on regular fuel in the summer. Better in the winter as I drive more highway then. You should easily be able to atain 30mpg with a 4 cylinder fwd or even a push button 4wd.

A Prius is a dumb idea. If you really want a new car and good gas mileage get a Echo. It would take you about 160k miles just to pay for the difference in gas savings and that would be assuming you don't use the air in the summer which where you are I don't see as an option. In that 160k it is likely that you'll have more expenses with the hybrid than you would a gas engine (i.e. battery replacement or drain over time that would lower your power yield from the batteries).

A hybrid now is nothing more than a "feel good" purchase. It isn't practical, nor is it better for the enviroment in most cases. Might be a different story if you're driving 150k a year in one car.

Besides, Harry, for what you'd spend on a hybrid or a new anything, you can instead buy tankers of premium for your SVX.

Here's a real XT for ya too! Granted it isn't the later one which I think looks better but looks real nice. The T-belts shouldn't be too much of an issue for ya and I'll bet you can get it for $300ish if not everything works on it.

They really are great cars! Pricey when new like the SVX but parts are pretty much interchangable with the Loyale/GLs

Subieman90 has a Turbo 4wd he's looking to unload cheap as well, needs an engine though and it is up here in Lancaster.

I absolutely love how the proponents of electric vehicles conveniently ignore how we generate the electricity to power those cars when saying they're better for the environment.
