Swapping it to a 4.44 tranny will put less stress on the tranny, and gears, so I would think it would hold up better than a 4.11 one.

But it will probably be harder on axles...

But the gear ratios on 5MT's are much shorter than the 4EAT. As a result, with 4.444's he may be cruising at 3500rpms+ at just 75 mph in top gear.

While that rpm is perfect for a little flat four, the EG33 may not like it over the long haul...

And why would you think that, as the EG33 has a HIGHER redline than the 4 cylinder Suby's....so actually, it should be harder on the Vehicle it came out of...plus they have a higher 5th gear, so it wouldn't be that bad at 75mph...

Tom, easiest and quickest way to get back on the road. Go to EZ Pull in New Ringgold. Their website is www.joesusedparts.com I think but if it doesn't show just do a yahoo search for EZ Pull New Ringgold. Go there 1st thing on any day, find the tranny you want (they should have about 15 gen 1 Legacys there not sure how many 4wders and sticks). Go pay the counter $55 and then show them which car you want the tranny from. About 2 hours later you'll be on your way with a tranny that they pulled for ya . Typically I'll tip the guy $5 or $10 who pulls it at the start to make sure they do a good job.

4.44 are out of the question for me. I don't want to be running too high an rpm on the highway and I don't want gears that short. I know it take strain off the driveline but from a realistic aspect a 4.11 5mt is perfect for my wants and needs. Jesse knows a guy parting out a WRX that I should be getting the pedals from, depending on the price I may buy the trans and rear too. Downgrading to a 3.90 but thats kind of a last resort situation as there is not a huge strength difference between 5mt's unless they have the R/A gears already. So it looks like im gonna shoot for a push style 4.11 hopefully from a late model forester. Wish me luck as next week im gonna take a trip to penn. to visit to upull it yards and if none there, I have one in Jersey but it is a small yard.

Wonder if it was the front diff that let go?

this was definately not a front diff it is probobly the input shaft gears just breaking. I lost all gears so I think thats the only possibility but i dunno until i crack it open next week.

P.S. i found a WRX 5mt w/ 40k plus matching rear for $850. What do you guys think?

Huck,

The top gear on the Subaru 4EAT is 0.694 - so even with 4.44 gears, you could cruise along the highway at under 3000rpms at 70mph (with the torque converter locked).

On Subaru 5 speeds, the 4.11 5MT in the '96-'98 Legacy Outbacks had a top (5th) gear ratio of 0.871. Impreza 5MT's typically have a top gear ratio of 0.78 or 0.738. Therefore, this shorter top gear in the 5MT will cause the engine to spin at higher revs on the highway compared to the 4EAT.

I can definitely understand why Tom doesn't want to go with 4.44's on his next 5MT - they would just be too extreme for everyday driving.

That's about perfect for everyday driving. Do you know the 5th gear ratio for your current 5MT?? (the one that exploded! )

that I do not know. But I do know I found one for $150 wiht a 6month warranty!!! I might just get it, i am waiting for a call back about the serial # on the trans. I may still need to take a trip to the yard as I may need the slave cylinder for it. BTW I had a thought last night, Would the WRX pedals and master cylinder work with a push style hyroulic trans?? Just curious
