Fixed autranny and NEW UNIQUE MOD

hey all-

around september of last year, my car lost 3rd and 4th gear on a roadtrip about 3 hours from home.. i had to wait until 1 in the morning and cruise home at 40mph.. not pleasant.

i wanted to put a five-speed in, but i lack the mechanical knowledge and the time to hunt for parts, so it seemed like a direct 4EAT swap would be easiest.. after discussing and haggling for awhile, Subafreak agreed to replace the front diff on his old 4EAT and swap his out for mine at a very reasonable price (i won't name numbers)

well, not wanting to shell out a substantial amount of cash without getting SOMETHING "cool" in return (let's face it, 4EAT's are about the furthest thing from "cool" in all possible respects of the word), I asked Jesse what he thought we could do..

he suggested swapping out the final drive ratio for 4.11 gears, and that's exactly what he did.

the private message i got this morning read:

"I revs about 3,250rpms at 80mph "

i haven't driven it yet, but if the numbers are correct, the swap has gone perfectly. i'll post my butt-dyno results as soon as i pick the car up next weekend.

i'd like to close this with a HUGE thank-you to Subafreak for willing to improvise and work with a starving DJ on a tight budget. This guy knows his stuff and to the best of my knowledge, there is nothing he cannot do.

At last it has been done.

Gee I was begining to think nobody would try it, Don't know how long I have advocated this, as the best and safest mod.

A 17.8% difference in gearing will reduce the load on the gearbox, and give the same percentage increase in torque at the wheels.

If the 3.545:1 does 15.5 for the quarter, the 4.11:1 should run about 14.8 secs. Add a nox boost to that and it's headed for high 13s.

Harvey.

That's pretty cool, Adam. I wouldn't do it on my SVX, since I use it mostly for road trips o nthe freeway, but that's neat.

Let us know how you like it.

I can say that it breaks the tires free alot easier now I wasn't even trying but had to pull out quikly and the roads were a little damp, and well it was spinning tires, four of them.

you're sure all four broke loose and not just the front two? because.. well.. i've had experience with the front two wheels breaking traction at launch before.. it cost me about $800....

Well it started with the fronts and then the rears kicked in, but I'm pretty sure it was at least spinning 3 at one time.

PS. I just want to make sure it's NOT gona brake.

Swapping the gears is just like changing the regular ring and pinion, just with different ones. I'm not sure going into a 4EAT is a prodject for the faint of heart or anyone that wouldn't feel comfortable just doing it with out directions. Besides I all ready don't get enough sleep. zzzzzzzzz

Prices can vary alot. Finding a whole Legacy with a slipping tranny with the right gears for $50 is a good start. Having a good SVX tranny that needs ring and pinion bearings is another.

FWD/AWD?

Do I need an AWD 4EAT to get the correct parts to swap, or will a FWD version work?
