Thinking about a new car..

I just got my first full-time job and i'm pretty excited about it.. starting in a few months, my pay will be at a level high enough to afford a relatively new car with low miles. my svx is great, but i need something that i can put a LOT of miles on and not feel guilty. I'll probably keep the SVX around for special occasions and meets, but i'm looking for something lightweight, quick around corners, good on gas, and pretty sharp..

i'd like to get another big, fast car (2xturbo supra or 300zx) but a small car just makes more sense from an economical standpoint.

i've been looking a lot at the 2000 toyota celica gt-s with the 6-speed and the high-compression motor. for a front-drive car with a 1.8 liter engine, it seems to do pretty well for itself. does anyone here have any direct experience with the car?

for what it's worth, i test drove one when they first came out, and it was pretty fun to drive. you really feel like you're in a cockpit. the speedometer would take a little to get used to; at 0mph the needle points straight down. i test drove the e-shift version with the buttons on the steering wheel and that was pretty cool. it's got lights that show you what gear you're in. my only complaint was that when you took your foot off the gas, it felt like it had way too much engine braking--i think it was just the high compression of the engine, but something else to get used to.

I would look at a VW GTi, especially the R32 version. If you really start making the big bucks, an Audi S4 would look good next to SVX.

My brother was in a similar situation and drove the Celica GT-S along with many other cars. He settled on the Acura RSX. It's a great little car and far more for the money.

I always liked the looks of the GT-S but it's seems there were always a few little things that they never fixed on it to make it perfect, like make it AWD and turbo. Other than that it's a Toyota so it's probly as reliable as a rock.

..sooooooo

if you throw it into the water, it'll sink reliably?

i think i'll buy used.. probably a 2000 gt-s.. i want that high-comp motor and close-ratio gearbox.. but i dunno, maybe a celica isn't the best way to spend that kind of money.. i could probably get into a legacy GT limited if i looked hard enough.. but would repair costs bring me down? i dunno, i guess there's a lot to think about.. i basically figured that a toyota would be a pretty reliable investment.. i'd like to get a '94 or '95 mr2 turbo, but i'd probably be asking for a world of hurt..

plus there'd be no place to put my turntables

I Work at an acura dealership and I'd stay away from RSXs they're garbage (imo). Used to work at a VW dealership and drove around some 20th aniv. GTIs which looks pretty much like an R32 but is the same thing as a 337. 180 hp, 6speed, recaros, 18" wheels etc. And if you were so inclined they're pretty easy to modify to over 300 hp. Seems like you can get one with really low miles for around 20k.

my votes go for a WRX, 944 Turbo, or a 928.

We were at a traffic light next to a 928 with a rear ricer wing taller than the height of the roof on saturday - looked like the wing on a top fuel car. The hood had the center section raised - beginning at the front and about 2ft wide and 3-4in tall back to the windshield. This section was painted blue and had white stars painted on it. He had dual fartpipe exhaust.
The rims stuck out wider than the car.

There was a redneck behind the wheel.

I had my digital camera with me but was afraid to use it. If I see it again I will.

No, I did not attempt to race. I know better and on top of that the sheer embarrassment of being beat by something so ridiculous looking might have shrunk my manhood for months.
