Howling Sound

Well I tried to ignore it for as long as possible but can't anymore.

I've got a constant-pitched howling sound, a bit like blowing into a bottle, that's sensitive to gas peddle pressure. When the peddle is pushed down half-way, the sound is loudest. When the peddle deviates from this position, the howl fades out. It happens in any gear and at any RMP. I took it to a mechanic to have him test drive it, but the car didn't do it at that time. This was a few months ago. The sound is more prominant now.

I've heard it might have something to do with the air intake, but dunno. Any thoughts?

Damn, Larry - i almost choked on my coffee!

sorry Davie, i don't have a clue. i guess i'd have to actually hear the howl. its sounds like the middle of the gas pedal might be the resonant frequency where its loudest. i'd check for leaks on the intake tube and exhaust, they maybe a trip back to the mechanic.

does it howl hot or cold, immediately upon starting, any gear, etc.? more info will help the gurus on here give you a diagnosis. good luck.

It only howls when it's in gear and warmed up, but in any gear and at any speed. So I couldn't rev the engine when the car's still and have someone listen for the noise.
Again, it's constant pitched and a howl. Kind of like the wind blowing past a closed house window during a violent storm (best way I can describe it.)
Thanks.

It didn't look too bad, but there was a paint chip stuck in there along with some dust. The filter was a bit dusty. Here's a few pics. Thanks.

EDIT: It wasn't a paint chip. Something flew into me on the highway last week. It had to be a piece of siding or flooring or something like that. Not to worry though, it didn't do any damage and the problem was happening before this incident.

I cleaned all that crap out of there with a can of air, not thinking to cover up the intake hole above but oh well. Hope it didn't suck up excess dust when I started it. I also sprayed of the air filter with the can of air also. On my way to and from work tonight, I didn't hear the howling. I hope it stays that way.

I had a similar sound.

Traced it to the kids in the trunk.
