Mid-grade gas

Can anyone tell me why my car is runing better on mid-grade gas then super?
I have been getting 1-5 miles per gallon better and the engine is runing very quiet.

Will this hurt my car by running a mid-grade?

Thanks,
Adam

I dont understand why you're experiancing this, but I surely wouldnt run anything but 91 or higher gas. There is a reason the car has that printed everywhere on it, and in the manual.

I saw the warning but the only pump working at my local stations super octane pump was out so I had to use mid-grade. I drove around on a full tank and she ran great. I put one other tank in her three days ago and the same. Runs better.
It has me stumped.

Cheers,
Adam

Unless your ECU is having issues, or has learned to run off midgrade and just started using premium....

im sure its all in your head...that happens to me all the time! i think something is up, when really its just me!,
The octane rating on the gas is a rating of the stability of the gas( in general, dont rip me apart here guys). The hgigh the octane rating the more controlled the explosion is, cuasing for not only better gas milage, but cooler buring conditions:more power.

phil

p.s. did the gas you were using contane ethynol(sp)?

Don't know if it contained ethynol in the gas. I have always used premium gas in her. Just was forced to use the mid-grade.
Just dont want to kill my engine..

Thanks for the info.
Cheers,
Adam

Significant Technical Input
I've been using 85 for about six months now with no detrimental effects - same mpg, power, etc.

Sawwy, but we have an Amoco station attached to one end of our building (not our station) and I've been pumping their cheapest into the Subie and the Jeep.

Other than a few short jaunts each week, my routine drive to work is three miles (six minutes) and I'll be danged if that's worth $1.85 per gallon. This time of year I spend more money letting the car warm up with the remote starter than I do by driving.

Thumbs up Mid-grade makes the grade!

Been using it almost exclusively for over three years. There might be a 1/10 second differential in the 0-60 & a couple in the quarter mile, and a few missing MPH off the VERY top end, but my experience has always been that the mileage is the same (or better!?), my car always starts, runs great & idles smooooth!

I've never had any work done on any part of the ignition/fuel injection system except replacing fuel & air filters, the PCV (once) and plugs. A can of FI cleaner every 6 months.

If you can run at 140+ mph often, involved in lots of street races, 0-60 and @ the strip, or are highly modified, premium gas probably makes a difference, but a very small one. If you are like the rest of the SVX owners out there, IMHO premium is a waste.

Enjoy the extra dime (or two!) per gallon you save!
