Hub removal

I usually bring the housing assembly to Subaru to press out the Hub and bearings. This time I would like to do it myself. How do you press out the hub from the housing without crushing the back plate. Is there a special way to set it up on the press without damaging the other parts?

While installed I use a slidehammer.

I don't have a slide hammer Has anyone used the press bench rather than a slide hammer? If so, how did you set it up?

I brought the housing assembly to my mechanic. He was able to remove the hub without the press. I was very impressed by his method. It is hard to explain, so I'll take some picture with instructions the next chance I get.

This is how my mechanic removed the rear hub from the housing. He took off the bolts that hold the back plate to the housing. This enabled him to slide the back plate far enough to grab the housing from the inner side with clamp. He set it up on a bench vise. He then slowly cranked the jaw clamp until the hub was pressed out. He did the same with the bearing.

they make a really neat tool called a hub tamer. I never used one til I started working at last shop I was at. Its like a mini press/slide hammer deal where u can do wheelbearings/hubs on the car

You may be able to rent one from a tool shop (they are pretty spendy to buy if you are just a backyard mechanic it takes about 10 bearing/hub jobs to equalize the cost)

When YT changed the bearings at my house, he used a hub tamer. Bearings are holding up nicely...Factory bearings, did not repack them.
