I think 4 hours was for both valve covers and the PCV.

Re: Passenger side oil leak

It comes to almost $250 on the dot after shipping costs from 1stsubaruparts.com FYI. There prices are better in most cases, just don't have the nice parts diagrams...

Thanks. Unfortunately, they have already ordered the parts. I did make sure to tell them to get the washers too.

Might be a good time to get that head gaskets thing done as well. Would be just about like a new engine!

It is the best deal as I believe its about 300 bucks but I cant really remember at the moment. It's around there somewhere, but considering the head gaskets are half of that by themselves, and the valve covers are not cheap themselves, you save a lot of money in the long run by getting the reseal kit. It should literally have every seal for the entire engine.

Just looked it up. $249.97

OK, when he is done with the valve cover gaskets and PCV, is there anything else he should replace or clean in connection with the stuck/clogged PCV? For example, are there hoses or parts that might be filled/coated with oil that should be cleaned? That is, other than the obvious coating of oil on the suspension and block and the pool of oil on top of the plastic cover.

I have noticed that my long term fuel trim number is still high on that bank even though it has been more than 2 months since we replaced the O2 sensor. Maybe it was related to this valve cover leak and/or PCV issue?

Re: Passenger side oil leak

As far as cleaning, you should not have to clean any hoses or anything. The valve is threaded directly into the intake manifold.

The fuel trim I doubt would be related to an oil leak, but I am not sure. Doesn't seem logical to me, though. What brand O2 sensor did you use?

I used a Bosch O2 sensor but the fuel trim was high before the O2 sensor was replaced. It just hasn't come down after the new sensor was installed and it has been quite a while.

On the hoses, he did find some oil in the hoses when he checked for vacuum to test the operation of the PCV. I have no idea which hoses or where else oil might have sneaked into that should be cleaned.

Re: Passenger side oil leak

Well this is turning out to be more involved than I had hoped. They STILL have my car. First, they didn't order all of the gaskets. They didn't realize that the three gaskets on each side were sold separately and the dealership that sold them the parts didn't know either or didn't tell them so they only got the larger gasket for each side. By the time the other gaskets showed up the next day, they already had other cars in the bays for other lengthy work like timing belt changes so they didn't have enough time to get my car done. We are on day three now. Luckily, I am on vacation so it isn't too much of a hassle.

What technique have people used to gain access to the driver's side (left, now that I know) valve covers to get them on and off?

Not sure but I think it is mostly 10mm.

Re: Passenger side oil leak

You must remove the battery, and i think a couple brackets . Its been a while since I looked at a complete engine bay. I am curious why you ask? If a shop is doing the work, and they can't figure out how to do the valve covers, maybe you should no longer be their customer. I believe the book says to pull the engine to do valve covers. It's not necessary, but for a well equipped/experienced shop it is probably quicker that way.

I know he removed the battery but he had to "jack up the engine" a little to get all of the bolts out. He didn't have to remove the entire engine though. One thing I did notice when I got home was that he didn't snap the spark plug wire clips back into the covers. I know the plastic is old and brittle so maybe he just figured they would break and not stay in anyways or maybe he tried but they broke on him. The engine was hot so I didn't attempt to snap them back in myself yet. On the plus side, they charged less than $200 in labor to do both covers and the PCV.
