HELP:speedo quit threw cel today what to look for

went to WI and back stayed in Motel. In the AM it was 25 F we warmed svx and about 2 minutes down the road, speedo stopped and threw cel.
pulled off the ramp that mile, stopped. turned car off.
restarted, power mode flashed 16 times.
shut off car
restarted, no power mode cel still on.
did a lap in the parking, everything shifted fine, and drove it home the remaining 400 miles, with cel on.
shifted and held gears fine, no speedo, no cruise, and a cel. Never did get a power mode flash just that once at first.

still got 27.5mpg the whole way, followed my baja to know speed and distance.

Waht do i look for first.
Had a potential buyer that was coming to look at it tonight, i told him the ordeal.
I have to get it fixed to sell.
Where to look guys?
speedos go bad?
or the top sensor to trans?
or something not thinking of.
Dang this car had no issues, now this.
help asap so i can get problem taken care of to sell. Just bought the baja.
edit- pretty sure the 16 flash code is due to speedo mia.
nothing else was wrong, this is a new from Subaru in 2000 trans, now having about 49k after install.

the vehicle is 100 percent stock.

Yep, that's the speed sensor located on the front diff. I do have a spare sitting in the garage that I could send out right away Monday morning if you can't find one locally before then. It's not too tough to replace either compared to some stuff on this car.

Just got thinking, double check the connection as well as the wiring first... It could be as simple as that

Going to check wiring connector in a bit.
Is the one you have laying around new?
I had the same thing go bad in a legacy turbo wagon a few years ago, with age and heat they get brittle. I want to only do this repair with a new plastic gear if yours in new, yes i will take it.

When i did the replacement on the legacy turbo (same 4eat) we did it with the trans still in the car, by pulling out the side axle, then marking and then unthrreading the retainer for the bearing cap, and put new seals in when putting back together. I assume this can be done same way with it still in the car, accessing from underneath while the car is hoisted.
dang that job sucked, but this should be the same.

It is not new. It was a good working unit from a car. And I definitely understand you wanting new with the condition of your car.
Just trying to help

Are you sure it's not just the sensor that is bad?

+1... I only had the sensor out, but I'll try to get the gear out of one of my bad diff's I have laying around as well. If I get it out, I could have it shipped off first thing monday morning. I know speedee deliver would have it there Wednesday and only be about $6, otherwise I could overnight it via UPS or something. I'll go out and work on getting the gear out shortly and let you know when I have it out of there.

Also, zip code so I can get quotes for you?

Re: HELP:speedo quit threw cel today what to look for

zip 50157

thanks

It was 20 degrees over the night where the car was parked. Pretty sure the gear oil was too thick with the cold just my hunch.

Working on it right now, have the side plates off. Anyone know how to get the gear(s) out? I don't have access to a bearing puller but also this diff is bad already so if I break stuff other than the sensor gears, its not a big deal. Already have the side plates off of the front diff.

Edit: Do you think you only need the gear that drops down from the sensor or are you going to need the one on the carrier as well?

Re: HELP:speedo quit threw cel today what to look for

Nate.
Hey, I just pulled out the top sensor.
tried to turn it with a screwdriver it is seized.
then i pulled this part out of the trans top, its is what turns the sensor.

you can see the bottom part where it twisted off (likely due to the sensor seizing)
So, I am pretty sure to replace that part, the bearing side has to come out.
Nute sure if my gears are bad but likely as well.

why would the sensor seize in 20 degree temp?

Thats a hosed speedometer shaft
