Door seal / rubber / metal lubricant
In addition to looking for a lubricant for the hood latch, I was thinking of conditioning or protecting the door seals from the inevitable freezing rain we get here in the winter. The two products which seem to have the biggest fan bases are Gummi Pflege for the conditioner and Krytox for a lubricant. Krytox is an incredibly inert yet effective lubricant developed for NASA. Gummi Pflege appears to be a conditioner based on glycerine rather than silicone or petroleum which can be damaging to plastics, glass and the rubber seal itself. Apparently it is difficult to find in its original gel form. Zymol seems to be a similar glycerine product that can be applied the old fashioned way.
For the rubber seals it looks like the best treatment would be an application of Zymol or Gummi Pflege conditioner followed a day or so later with a coating of Krytox lubricant. That should keep the rubber in good condition and keep it from getting damaged from being stuck to the car body by freezing rain. It should also reduce squeaking noises and wind noise in the doors and sunroof. I think Krytox should also be useful as a lubricant for the door and hood latches. Anyone try these yet?
