Bolts for holding motor on stand?

OK, this might be a dumb question. I'm going to be pulling my motor out this summer, and placing it on a stand to do head gaskets, cams, and some general refresh work. What length / thread pitch bolts do I need to hold the motor on the stand? I'd like to have this ready to go when I do it, rather than wait until it's dangling on the hoist to figure this out.

Also, related - what are the accepted places on the motor to attach chains when pulling it? Do I need any special equipment / tools or a load leveler to get it out properly?

Re: Bolts for holding motor on stand?

I just used my bellhousing bolts to put my motor on a stand. They were getting replaced anyways.

As for lifting points, there are two attachment points. One is on the alternator bracket i believe, and another one is back towards the timing hole on the bellhousing.

Re: Bolts for holding motor on stand?

I should add that this did not damage the bolts at all.

Re: Bolts for holding motor on stand?

Well that was my thought at first, but I wasn't sure the bellhousing bolts would be long enough to clear the offsets of the mount on the stand, plus I didn't want to damage them (mine will be reused, unless I mangle them getting them out). Didn't want to find out the hard way that they were gong to be too short. Good to know that they'll clear, and should be sturdy enough to hold the whole thing without bending.

Good to know about the lift points as well - I didn't want to just wrap it around some sturdy-seeming component and rip / break it off. Thanks for the help!

Re: Bolts for holding motor on stand?

no problem. the hardest part of yarding an engine is completely disconnecting everything. there were some coolant lines under the passenger side head that gave me a little "trouble" cost me about 50 bucks i think. just be careful when you start lifting it out
