Paint?

So I just bid (Ebay) on a rear OEM spoiler for my 92. The guys handle is gabstersma and he seems to have an excellent rating (99.6% positive) so I bid.

The spoiler is black. My car is teal.

What I want to know is: 1. Is the original paint a one or three stage paint job and... 2. Does it have a clear coat or not.

I assume it's a single stage with one coat of clear.

My dad is going to be shooting it so that's the reason I'm asking.

Monday I'll swing over to the dealer and get the paint code for the car.

It is a two-stage paint job, basecoat and clearcoat

2. Does it have a clear coat or not?
Yes. Clearcoat over color basecoat

I assume it's a single stage with one coat of clear.
Yes, but use more than one coat of clear for protection and depth of gloss

My dad is going to be shooting it so that's the reason I'm asking.

The color code for your car is Dark Teal, #269. Check the plate under your hood on the driver's side strut tower.

Wet sand the entire spoiler with 600 grit prior to shooting. Feather out any chips. Make sure the spoiler is smooth, and has no peel texture.Wipe it off with alchohol wipes before the basecoat to remove any finger oils, ect.
Should be a very straight forward project. good luck

Me I'm paint and body ignorant by choice ... took a year of auto body in high school (way back in the day)... hated it. I'm the mechanic at our shop... I like to build things that go fast ... plain and simple. He's the interior/paint/body guy and you've just answered all of his questions, so once again THANKS.

Yes, this is the colour for the lower bumper and side flash section on the three-tones.

It's not the colour for the darker grey rims. We don't have codes for any wheel colours.

The rest of the car is covered in Liquid Silver, code 249, not including the black roof and trunk of course.

The Japanese named this colour Medium Grey Metallic. Dark Grey Metallic is what we think of as Graphite, the code is 222. The USA market did not get the SVX in 222, but some early 90s Legacys came in 222 for the US market.

I have a sneaking suspicion the SVX would look really cool sprayed completely in Med Grey 217. Up to now I have never seen anybody, Japan or anywhere, do this colour on an SVX

Thats funny. I also got a 92 teal and the previous owner gave me the spoiler(In black). My friend painted it for $200. Sanded/buffed it, filled in the chips, painted it (269) and put on a clear coat. It sat in my room for 2 weeks. The weather was nice and I just put it on 2 days ago!!! Use the lower 2 predrilled holes in the trunk. I was soo worried about the drilling. Like a family member in surgery. We drilled it with three different bits all increasing in size. Then we used some RVT Black on the holes (Top and bottom). When your placing it down make shure its completly flush and you drill you holes straight not crooked. The fiberglass stinks and make a nice mess so plan a wash before and after. And it matches and looks great. It looks better from every angle. Way worth it!!!!

I thought perhaps you had a teal spoiler on top of a black bootlid [trunk lid] but I realise now that teal cars are all one colour.

[I've only ever seen two of them over here, both Japanese market cars]

It's pretty dark in NY. Somebody should tell them to switch on the lights.
