Front end play - Inner or Outer tie rods?

I have a 1992 Subaru SVX with some play in the front end. I replaced both ball joints, and there is still some minor play. How can I tell if its the inner or outer tie rods?

Get the front end in the air. Make sure it secure on jack stands and move the wheel while closely checking all joints.

Other things you want to check;
- Make sure the steering rack is secure to the subframe
- Check the control arms where they mount to the frame, they are designed to move laterally to the car, but use a pry bar to check for sideways or up/down movement.

get a friend to shake the tire back and forth and hold on to the outter tie rod socket to feel for movement... then push down on the power steering rack boot and feel for the same thing. its a very good chance that its your inner tie rod...
