Smallcar Shift Kit questions
Sitting here bored in Iraq I was browsing the svx warehouse and came across the 5mt kit, now I have some questions. I'm looking to buy a house when I get home, and I want a cool sports car, but I can't afford both so I'm probably just going to throw a few grand at the svx. I hate automatic cars, I hate driving them, I hate owning one, but I love everything else about the svx so this seems like a good buy.
What's the torque split on the kits for sale? What cars do they come from? Those who have bought and installed one recently, was it totally worth it? Will it up the resale value at all? Anybody having awd problems like the auto seems to have? Is my auto tranny cooler applicable on the manual one? Are they lighter? How long did shipping take, and was every single nut, bolt, and zip tie included? After it arrives at my doorstep will I need to go pick up any more parts?

From what I have heard, you are better off putting the pieces together yourself, rather than buying from Smallcar.

ugh, I just followed this link http://www.smallcar.com/svx/5spdkit.htm and it looks like a lot of fabrication is still needed even after buying the kit. Guess it will have to stay automatic and I'll buy some nice furniture or something.

Build a nice garage and your main furniture piece could be the SVX.....you might have to buy a nice mounting bracket to attach your Flat Screen Plasma tv to the wall

Mine does, I bought the $5 ebay cupholder plate that fits perfectly under the armrest. Best $5 I've ever spent.
oh and upon further browsing I dug into the ecutune.. I um, think they made a mistake on the dyno chart? It says stage 2 puts our cars to 280whp???

In that chart stage 2 was about a 150 shot of NO2 not the curent stage 2 with the Z32 MAF. Allso TOMSSVX can fab all of the parts for the swap. http://www.subaru-svx.net/forum/showthread.php?t=35486

The absolute budget way would be to buy a 90-94(cable actuation) Legacy with a dead motor or body damage. I've bought 5 over the last year for an average of $250. You can sell off some of the parts and get some or all of your money back. That gets you the tranny, diff, flywheel + bolts, pedals, starter, shifter, x member and mount for next to nothing. For a hydraulic clutch setup, use a 95-98 Legacy for around $1000 in the same condition as above. Then just add a clutch and the fab stuff and you're good to go.
I believe the torque split is 50/50. It's worth it, but expect the car to be a little less quiet and luxurious. Resale value seems about the same. The auto tranny cooler won't work on the manual and isn't necessary. There is a weight loss of about 100-125 lbs when switching to a 5MT. Although with the higher gear ratio, it seems like about 500 lbs. Hope that helps. |
