Steering Shudder

Hey guys,

Just wondering what could be causing a shudder in my car, while turning near idle speeds? Could something be up with my AWD clutch? How often should I change the fluid for the AWD, and the transmission? I bought the car a few months ago, with 91,XXX miles on it. Is it due for a change?

It sounds to me like your AWD transfer clutches are binding.

If you feel it in the steering wheel than it's the steering system. Lucas PS additive fixed that in mine.

If you feel it as in the SVX slows down in turns and your seat starts shuddering, well than it's that pesky set of transfer clutches hanging up. It could be the transfer solnoid is worn out or the clutch pack is gone. You can try putting in the FWD fuse to see if it goes away as that might help.

You may also want to leave the (-)neg battery off overnight and reconnecting the morning and idle for 20 minutes without touching the gas.

Take care too,
John

Will it also shudder if you are stationary?

I dont feel it in the steering when I turn so i doubt thats what it is. I feel it more in the seat if anything. And no it doesnt shudder while im sitting still.
Funny thing is, I feel it at almost idle speeds when I have the steering wheel at near lock. How would I go about fixing my transfer clutch, and my clutch pack? or are they the same thing?

Well before throwing parts at the problem try duplicating the issue with the AWD fuse in place to see if the shudder goes away.

Happen to me, replacing wheel bearings fixed it

I had a shudder at higher speeds (say >30 mph) and hard turns - turns that you can feel in your seat. It did not shudder at super low speeds (say <20 mph). The shudder only happened when I turned one way and the mechanic replaced one of the front bearings and it never happened again (2+ years ago).

Just something else to consider.

Good luck
