Comparing other Subaru's to the SVX
Having driven a variety of Subaru's (have a Forester now while my car gets a new engine) as loaners and such, I realize just how unlike any other Subaru the SVX is. When I read reviews of the Forester, it is said that it is essentially cobbled together from the parts bin of the Outback and Imprezza. The only similarities I find with the SVX and other subaru's are:
1) the cruise control stalk. I really like the way it's set up, except on my SVX I have to push the CC button a few times to make it come on. 2) I noticed the sunroof switches in an RS I looked at were the same as the SVX. 3) The MAF sensor in many Imprezza's are the same as the SVX so I hear. That's about all I see that was "stolen" from the SVX. It really was a groundbreaking automobile that truly was all new and never to be repeated (i.e. it was abandoned by Subaru!). Everything seems so unique, from the switchbanks to the A/C controls. You can even tell on Legacy's and Foresters that Subaru bought the window switches and power locks from Nissan because they are the same that is on the Sentra. I find no "borrowed" parts (obvious ones, I know the tranny is a Nissan) in the SVX. And after picking thru a few '92-'94 Legacy's at the junkyard, there seems nothing in common with the SVX. What does it mean? Nothing really. Just means that parts are even harder to find! LOL Jeff

The shifter in my 5-speed looks just like an Impreza shifter........oh wait...It IS an Impreza shifter.

Funny how this thread popped up. As I speak (post), my daughter called me from somewhere in Texas to report car trouble on a trip to Tahoe City, CA, with her boyfriend. The car - a late 80's Suby Loyale wagon. The problem - WHEEL BEARING!! Granted, this crate probably has 500,000 miles on it, but I just wondered if AWD vehicles in general have more bearing grief than "lesser engineered" vehicles.
Since most of you guys seem to have long time Subaru experiences, please chime in. Blessing you in advance, Ron.

Nah, fwd/awd cars usually don't have wheel bearing problems like we used to see on rwd cars. Main problem for rwd cars was open bearings (on front wheels) - they needed periodic maintenance. Awd/fwd bearings are sealed (o.k.. some older fwd have open bearings on rear - always exceptions) and have eliminated the maintenece portion of the formula. Generally whenever periodic maintenance is eliminated the part lasts longer.
I would hazard to guess the SVX's problem lies in the offset/width of the wheel. The configuration loads the bearing too much for long life. There's some simple enginering reasons why they did it that way and some simple engineering could have changed it, but I'm sure the accounting office got in the way... Beav |

The Impreza RS guys had quite a bit of trouble with their rear wheel bearings as well. They had the same type of situation, though. Once the first one went bad, the replacements seemed to shell out much more quickly. I'm not sure what Subaru's deal is with that. Please spend just a bit more money and get it right. Geez. I've never heard enough about the Loyale line to know sqat about them. Sorry.
