I hope it does not indicate impending tranny trouble.
Tom
Tom, Synthetics can withstand higher temperatures before breaking down, but synthetics will not cause the temperature to drop. Try taking out the ATF thermostat. I think that will provide some information about what's happening.

I'd be quite concerned if in this kind of weather I was running at 210-212. 212 is the highest indie. verified flash point for ATF I could find (Mobil 1). After that temp the fluid breaks down very rapidly and no longer does its job. Switching to synthetics really won't affect the temp too much but usually will give you a higher flash point. Since you have normal fluid in there now I'd definately suggest Mobil since it is compatable with any and every fluid out there provided it is ATF II or III. Definately insulate that puppy to be sure your reading is somewhat correct though.

I do plan on bypassing the bypass valve and insulating the sending unit when I can find a free moment. I will be surprised if the insulating the sending unit will make much difference. It seems to me it is already shielded because it is located under the battery and thus has quite a bit of metal (the frame, end of the bumper assembly and a piece of sheet metal)between it and the engine. Although stranger things certianly have happened, so I will give it a try.

The MY95 Legacy TSB says it comes on at ~ 302F.

So, paraphrasing what immortal said: when it comes on, stick you head between you legs and kiss your.....transmission goodbye.

Wow. And the caution blurb on the driver's sun visor says something like, "avoid hard driving" while the light is on.

it should say, "avoid hard driving ON THE WAY TO HAVE THE TRANSMISSION REPLACED" while the light is on.

being in Az

our temps are already over 100 out in May....
after driving around for about 20 min or so in traffic
my guage will hit 215 pretty easily.

I have my sending unit in-line of the Trans
line out of the tranny before the cooler, so I know
what the Temp is of the fluid headed to the cooler
and it will only get better.

Ive been installing my coolers up in the dr side wheelwell
at an angle to get the most air flow and stay protected.

I removed the belly pan a few weeks ago and got a consistent 20 degree reduction in tranny temp on a 1600 mile round trip.

I used to see tranny temp during highway driving at very close to 100 degrees + ambient temp (80 outside = 180 tranny) That dropped by 20 degrees throughout the highway portion of the trip.

Not sure yet if it has helped around town - I think there are too many other factors involved to get an accurate assessment. (mainly, my right foot controls the tranny temp in city driving)
