Noise in Reverse

When I move the car in reverse, there is a thump or thunk. Researching a bit yields a probable broken trans. mount, or poor mount job. The transmission was replaced before i owned it (the car is new to me) with a 70,000 mile rebuilt one. I looked under the car the best i could and couldn't see anything wrong with the mount. Any advice on checking this better? Is there something else i should be concerned about? The noise occurs only when i move after i move in reverse, NOT when i first shift into reverse (even if i wait a long time before moving).

Thanks in advance.
-Ryan

p.s. The problems i have previously posted, power steering, security, a/c etc. were all fixed with a fuse a battery two o-rings a belt and about two hours. makes me an even happier new SVX owner

what happened to mine was the rubber cleanly separated from the metal part of the mount. You couldn't tell by just looking at it because it is under vertical downward pressure while just sitting.

It's when you give it gas, and the engine torque lifts the rear, that the sound is generated.

two ways to check that I can think of.

1) actually remove the rear mount and check it, or

2) carefully jack up the transmission and see if the mount separates. the "carefully" part is there so you don't induce a failure in the mount by forcing it apart. if you choose the latter, also be careful of where you jack it up (at the rear edge of the pan?)...also might want some cushioning material between the jack and the transmission.

You should also check the rear diff mounts - they also break. These are easy to check - you can actually see if they are broken by looking at them.

Is this a problem that can get worse when i am not driving in reverse? I need to use the car but i don't want to if this could be a big problem.
I mean, is there a chance the transmission will just fall out if i hit a big bump on the highway or something. I'm not trying to sound like an idiot here, but i just don't have time to work on it for a few days, unless it is a safety hazard.

Nope transmission is not going to fall off, neither will the rear diff.
As long as you are happy to live with the thump...
