HELP ASAP! Rear caliper pin seized!
Okay, I'm doing the rear brakes on my SVX, becauase the driver's side rear caliper wasn't sliding properly, and prematurely wore out the inner pad. Anyway, the caliper pin that it pivots on (the upper one, not the one you remove) is SEVERLY seized. How do you lubricate it?! On the FRONT brakes, the caliper literally slides off the pin... but on these back ones, I cannot get htem to move at all!!!!!! Is there ANYWAY to remove the caliper from the mount/frame part?!?!? Please tell me how to lubricate it!

The caliper pins are screwed into the caliper holder, so you should be able to get a wrench on it, and pull it off. Once you get it off you can give it a good beating :O
The front caliper pins needed a 17mm wrench, so I'd guess the rears are 14 or 15mm

Okay, that pin is ****ed. Majorly. It's SO seized that it's really really hard to even pivot the caliper on that upper pin, but I need it to COME OFF, so I can clean and lubricate the pin. So I took a big screwdriver, placed it near the pin's location on the CALIPER, and beat the living daylights out of my screwdriver with a sledgehammer: Result?? THE CALIPER HASN"T EVEN GONE INWARD AT ALL. How the heck has it gotten so seized?!?! My boots are fine! Anyway, anyone have any suggestions? Othwerise I'm going to start putting everything back together, and go home losing.

My best advice would be to get some PB Blaster in there and move the caliper up and down until it rotates somewhat freely.
Then try a pry bar between caliper and mount - while moving caliper up/down - in case a small "lip" has formed in the pin that the caliper is catching on. When it comes time to reinstall I know Dow Corning makes a grease specifically for brake caliper pins: MOLYKOTE PG 54 PLASTISLIP, I'm sure there are other brands as well. |
