Uh Oh! Looks Like Trans Has Gone At Last!!
Hi All,
Can somebody pls give me the lowdown on auto trans failures? My 95 SVX has done 142,000 ks and the trans looks like it has just carked it. It started dropping gears a couple of days ago (momentarily slipping into neutral) and has now just haemorrhaged all over the garage floor with smoke billowing everywhere, probably from the fluid on the hot exhaust. I understand this is a common problem, but was hoping to not cop it as I don't hammer the car. Is anybody able to give me a bit of technical rationale before I present myself and wallet to the nearest trans specialist for a severe thrashing. IE what causes the problem, how simple or complex is it to fix, how much is it likely to hurt ($) and do I have to go to a Subaru specialist or is it ok to take it to a general practitioner? Would greatly appreciate any advice on offer. Thanks heaps guys. Happy New Year to all. Timbo |

Timbo,
The early model 4EAT autos were prone to overheating and subsequent failure. However, by '95 all those problems were corrected so your failure may be quite different. The attached links provide some more 'in-depth' reading on the subject.
