I already swapped out strut/spring assys with my parts car and it's still the same. Next, I'm gonna swap out CV shafts and see what happens.

I think "Clunk, Rattle & Roll" was originally recorded by Joe Turner in 1953. That was before the cover version by Bill Haley & the Comets in 1955.
It had a good beat and was a great Lindy-Hop dancing tune.

So today I installed new springs and the rubber donuts at each end of the spring, and
Wait a minute. My clunking noise hasn't gone away. I thought it did but it was wishful thinking. It may be slightly better, but it's definitely not gone. Sorry if you all rushed out to buy new springs!
And BTW, the mechanic said I didn't need new inner tie rods yet either. I swear though, I didn't have the "clunk" before I changed struts-springs-mounts. Count me in as still clunking. I'm doing a road trip to Philly next week too. I hope the roads are smoother than Rochester's! Tim |

Me too
I just swapped out CV shafts to no avail. That makes CVs, struts/springs, sway bar end links and hub assembly for me. What's next? Turn up stereo.

what about the a-arm bushings? sway bar link ends? Tie rods? Strut mounts? Where is the sound coming from? Top or bottom? Mine's definitely bottom.

I haven't done the A-arm bushings or the tie rods. The tie rods are definately tight and it doesn't sound like a worn bushing sound. It sounds like something is loose, and it is definately at the bottom. Sometimes I can feel it if I have my left foot on the dead pedal. The sound only came about after I replaced my hub assy. And I have switched it back twice since. But what could be loose? I have checked everything three times. This bites.

It's funny how everyone is describing the same noise and everyone noticed it right after they replaced something in the suspension. I guess I will have to take it to CARR Subaru and let Danny Squires check it out. If he can't find it, no one can. How's that for pressure Danny?

YAYAYAYAAAAAAAAAAA!
CLLLLLUNNNNNNNNNK ISSSSSSS GONNNNNNNNNNNEEEE!!!!%!#%*()!#()*^()*!#^()*!#)*(^*
()!#()*^()*!#^ After 15 seconds under the hood tightening the center nut, the clunk is GONE!!! I checked the three nuts before, but i never bothered checking the center nut. It was a full three turns loose. After a quote from subaru for $933 in parts, and $300 in labour (LMFAO), it was solved for NO money WHATSOEVER!!^%@!#!#^!#^!#^!#^ YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!! Assholes didnt even open the rubber lid for the strut. They would have seen it right away. |

Huh? What center nut? Please explain!

Under your hood, pop the "d-shaped" plastic cover, then underneath that you will see a little rubber grommet covering the center nut. You can remove that with your fingers, and you will see the center nut.

There is also a TSB related to this noise. The TSB says that there is an updated strut mount available. But sounds like you got it fixed.

Something else to check
I was tinkering with my SVX a few days ago, and found that the hood had a *tiny* bit of free play in the latch mechanism when I pulled and pushed up and down on the hood while it was latched. I popped the hood, wrapped a few layers of electrical tape around the latching hook/bar, and that good rid of the free play and eliminated one of the clunking sounds! :-)
