Brake rotor minimum thickness

Okay I was just wondering about something as I try to save money on my SVX. It goes like this. I get my old rotors turned down that have been in car since I bought the car. I am lucky because they can be turned down right to the minimum size so I don’t have to buy new ones. Are you with me so far?

So I run these rotors with new pads for a year or more and of course the rotors wear. Now it comes time for new pads. My rotors are fine the faces do not run out. But is the thickness of the rotor safe to use? I could put new pads in and wear the rotors down some more since they don’t have to be cut.

How much wear is allowed on a rotor below the minimum value stamped on it?

Anybody have some thoughts on this?

The minimum value is the 'machine to' maximum. They can be used from this point, just can't be machined again.

Anyway just keep using them, the important part is, to take them off,,,,, just before,,,,,, they break.

No John, I wouldn't take the risk. I' ve slid down the road too many times.

I have seen one side of a disk worn away to the venting. If you want to try it.

not at minimum yet...

I repacked the front wheel bearings on the 97 Chevy pickup today, I measured the rotors for minimum and I have over 2mm to go. There were many cracks (small) ....any reason for concern?
The brakes work fine. Interesting how similar the calipers are to our SVX's (one piston vs two) the sleeves are on the bolts that attach the caliper to the spindle, easy to lube. Rotors seem small for a 6000 pound pickup.

David, They could be the grain structure of the cast iron.
