Re: Aftermarket trunk strut preference

I'd much rather have an inexpensive hood strut that bolts in w/o fiddling. I guess till then my ice scraper also makes an awesome hood prop.

As far as the trunk, for me atleast its "heavy" more due to the strange motion compared to normal trunks that just move in a simple arc. Regardless with the new OEM struts I put on its plenty easy.

Exactly! Physics at work (or against us in the case of our trunks).

Granted, our trunks are heavy compared to some others out there, especially with the light bar and large spoiler attached. But that also isn't the only issue at play here, they aren't THAT heavy.

Probably not going to happen, for the same reason these possible trunk struts are also going to require re-using the mounting brackets.

The prototypes I have were custom manufactured at a strut factory to the exact specs of a new OEM pair they had purchased. The length and points where they attached to the mounting brackets are identical.

However, they could not recreate the complete mounting brackets beyond the "swivel point" because they said the cost would be just too prohibitive.

So it would be the same with the hood struts as well.

The advantage with the hood struts is that we have found an off-the-shelf replacement for them that has been field tested for years and proved to be not only less than a 1/3 the price (plus a bit of labor) of OEM, but also a bit superior.

Not to mention as Danny says they don't have a 15+ year shelf life.

With the trunk we don't have this same advantage, but hopefully soon we will have something custom made for us and HOPEFULLY the price will be appealing and worth the effort as well.

Ok Lee, your theory is partially right, but not entirely. You forgot to measure the centre of balance on the trunk. Or if you want an horizontal line of balance between the license plate area and the area where rear glass meet trunk (doesn't meet actually, but you got the idea...)

Comparing it to the BMW E36 trunk which is exactly the same shape, only lighter. Here is a picture of the E36 trunk:

And here is in comparison, the trunk of the SVX (Stolen from Gamesy):

As you can see the license plate area is smaller than that of the SVX. There is no additional weight there, no taillight, no large wing, a couple of sheets of 1.5mm metal, etc... that's it.

Whereas the SVX has a taillight, a wing, and a double layer of thick fiberglass which makes the centre of balance more to the outside than in the middle/inside.

LOL Troy, when I posted my reply above, I was simply answering Lee while searching and uploading pictures

Didn't know that you already replied with the same thought

Good point!

Re: Aftermarket trunk strut preference

I never disagreed that stock strength replacement is sufficient, nor have I ever negated the fact that the physics of the operation of the trunk does not help the wear on the struts and that the weight is not set in the benefit of the owner when they go out.

However that does not change the fact that a lighter weight trunk would benefit both the life of a strut oem spec or not as well as make it easier to open and reduce the weight of the car.

I don't want the carbon fiber for the "look"

If you compare the reductions of the classglass hood as apposed to stock hood, to me that's worth the cost... now if we can get an option with similar reductions and a similar price or cheaper.. count me in. That's my point.

PS: Just a side note.... I'm stoked to have the first classglasshood with a scoop! Ya baby! Just a few weeks away!

Re: Aftermarket trunk strut preference

When all is said and done a 'custom' made trunk strut will not work any better, if even as good...last any longer... or be any cheaper...
I don't know exactly how they are made but so far the "15 year" shelf life is irrelevant.

Keith

I would still like to have an automatic "Up and Down" system.

Cool, then you shouldn't need to worry about this thread any more.

You already got your new OEM struts and are happy - carry on.

Re: Aftermarket trunk strut preference

I don't know the price yet, but if they are like the OEM struts, and a little cheaper, I don't know how we could go wrong. Are yo looking only at the trunk struts, or both trunk and hood? I am looking forward to seeing what you have up your sleave.

You are probably right... Logic has always been my friend, but I do have a open mind. That would account for my earlier, logical statement.

A better mouse trap is always the way to go. I would not rule out the possibility of someone working out a way to make it close and open automatically... at least open automatically.

As cool a mod as that would be, it would probably be very expensive to have done.

I'm in for trunk struts, and hood struts if those are done too.
