TPS questions

I read in another thread that a bad or maladjusted TPS can cause hard shifts. I've read over the how-to docs on adjusting and testing the TPS, and maybe its me but they're really not very easy to understand. I think I can figure out how to set it, but as far as testing it that one might be over my head a little bit. Is there any other way to test the TPS? And if it comes down to it, does anyone here know where I can find a replacement for slightly less than the $280-$300 average price I've been finding? What are the chances that I could find a functioning one on a junked or parted-out car?

Re: TPS questions

Dude I'm having issues with my baby's TTPS also. trying to find one in a junk yard is difficult. Everytime i went to a junk yard the car had been crushed. So prepare yourself for the quest for the fo the holy TPS.

Re: TPS questions

I paid something in the neighborhood of $185, with no added shipping charge, from either AutoZone's or Advance Auto Parts' Web site (I'm old and get the two confused). The part was identical to the one I took off the car, which I assumed to be original, down to the serial number molded into the plastic. This was awhile back and I wouldn't be surprised if the price has risen a bit.

Re: TPS questions

Yes it's adjustable, with the use of a volt meter.

Re: TPS questions

Do you adjust it with the ignition on or the motor running? Just a little unclear on that.

Re: TPS questions

I thought I was the only one! I just got a new multimeter and this will be the first thing I use it for.

Either, or both.
It's easier to adjust it with the key on and engine off, but I always double check it with the engine running.
I always set it to 0.48volts.
According to LAN that gives the best idle.

It is adjustable. I didn't do anything but hook it up and go.

Re: TPS questions

I payed $193 for mine about 4 months ago. I solved all kinds of problems for me including hard shifts, gear hunting at cruzing speed, and AWD issues as well. Check out my thread http://www.subaru-svx.net/forum/showthread.php?t=45940

The best way I found to test it's funcionality is to take it out (easy, just don't drop the screws under the manifold) and hook it up to the multimeter. Sweep it through the range and if the numbers are jumping all over (especially at the bottom end, low throttle) then it needs a replacement. If the numbers climb smooth than it just needs to be adjusted while installed on the car. The big board with the numbers marked in the How-To is a definitive test, but you'll be able to see the values jump without going to all that trouble if it is indeed needing replacement. Mine was very obvious once I had it out. Hope this turns out to be the "fix-all" that it was for mine.
