power steering whine

Well, the last few weeks have been pretty cold here in Iowa, and like most cars, mine does not like it at all. I always let it warm up at least 5 minutes before I go anywhere so that helps, but my power steering has been whining at me pretty good recently.

On average, it's been between 5 below and 0 degrees every morning for the past week and I always wince (sp) when I start the car because I know the P/S is not going to be happy. I had just been putting it down in the "cold weather" column, but could it be something else? I check it every other day or so, and it's never been low yet. Also, I added some Nichels power steering conditioner about 3 weeks or so ago. It actually kinda seems to do it worse since then, now that I think about it.

Anyways, do you think my pumps going bad, or should I just wait it out until the weather warms up? If it does go bad, it's not a HUGE deal to me...just replace the pump, and BAM. So yeah, just curious if others have had this problem, or possible solutions.

Thank you.

I have 'morning sickness' on my truck too. I can't turn the wheel at times which is rather scary. This started after I replaced the pump about 6 years ago. I know it is a faulty pump, but I have learned to deal w/ it. Just rock the steering wheel side to side a few times and I get a little movement, then full movement and I can steer again. Stupid GM.
As for your car, search, find o-ring results, do the how-to, drive a fixed car.
It seems the o-ring is usually the issue on the svx.

O-ring, huh? Interesting. If anyone else knows anything about said o-ring, I'd sure appreciate hearing it!

Ok, did a bit of searching and found THIS page. Only problem is that the computer I'm on won't open whatever file this is that shows me what to do.

Don't suppose I could trouble someone to give me a run-down and just explain how to do it... if that's possible??
