fuel pump

Basically I had the fuel pump replaced, brought the car home, all has been fine for a couple days, I drove it this morning, all was fine once again and now it wont start.
I took the hose off at the fuel filter, and once again no fuel. So I opened the little door in the trunk area to see if I could hear the pump and I noticed a hose that was not connected.
Is this an old connection or is this hose suppose to go somewhere?

Looks to me like you have an unconnected tube there as well...

As in, a tube that needs a connection, and an open connection.

I wonder if some lines have been replaced and the other ones just left there. The only way you could tell is by following them or find out if there is resistance when air is put into it.

There are three connected lines.
One is the fuel line,
one is the fuel return line,
and one is a vent tube.
All three of these lines snake above the gas tank, in front of the suspention in front of the drivers rear wheel.
They then go up through the floor and through the interior and out under the hood by the fuel filter.
I would replace those clamps with actual hi pressure fuel line clamps and check to see if those lines are actually FUEL INJECTION LINES.
fire suck!

There's a possibility that the metal lines had rusted through, so someone bypassed them with rubber tubing. Definately listen to OT, replace those clamps and check for tubing rated for fuel injection. It will state that along the tubing somewhere.

Thanks guys for the help, My lines did rust out about 6 months ago. A local tuffy replaced them with rubber lines, but I thought they would have removed the old stuff. - This is why I don't like other people working on my car unless its someone I know and trust. They should have removed the old stuff.
Fuel related things I am a bit nervous about messing with. I don't want it to go kaboom!
I will make sure to get proper hose clamps. And check the hoses to make sure they are the right kind.

Fuel pump is definately not working. So we are going to replace it AGAIN. And hopefully this will be the last time for a long time. Other wise we are going to have to figure out whats killing the fuel pumps.

There are two electronic modules in the trunk that control the fuel pump. A resistor and a modulator. If either of those are not working or not grounded the fuel pump will not run.

You may want to investigate those a little further, especially if it was a new fuel pump.

Subaru fuel pumps are like Superman. They rarely die. I'd verify that your getting juice there properly before I'd even think of replacing one or letting someone tell me its the fuel pump. Just don't smoke or weld around the lines if you wanna live through it! Does the pump cycle on when you turn the key to the on position? Does it even try?

Grounds are very important here as well so check your grounds around there. Our racer had a grounding issue and died on the track when it had an exhaust break (which was giving the fuel pump it ground.

When I had the last pump replaced, they checked the wiring to make sure it was not an electrical issue. (this car has been cursed with electrical gremlins) Assuming they knew what they where doing, the wiring should be fine.

I have a diagram of the grounding points somewhere, i'll have to check that out just incase though.

When you turn the key, it makes absoluely no noise at all indicating the pump is trying to work.

It could be the new one is just faulty. Which is what I am actually hoping for. - With this car, I am rarely that lucky though.

Again you're descriptions are making me doubt that it is actually the pump itself. They could be right but the odds seemed unlikely via my experience. A bad pump will usually make some sort of racket just not normal. The pump itself only comes on when the car is running and a "prime" prior to starting if I remember right.

I would put my money on the relay. Out all the Subies I've owned I've never had a fuel pump go bad nor have I know anyone who had one go bad, let alone 2! Look at the wiring and I think you'll have a positive there if you test it that is hot all the time, I thiink the system works via the ground but don't quote me on that. I'll try to find a few minutes in the morning to look at my book (just as Hocrest how rare that one is!)

You didn't put sand in your gas tank right?

lol, no sand in the gas tank.

The SVX got worked on today, and it seems as it was a wiring issue. I guess one of the wires was connected, but not connected enough to make the pump work. It now runs, so hopefully this was the only problem.

Thanks again guys!

Did the idiots give ya your money back for the fuel pump while you were there.

Glad you got her back on the road.

when clamping a hose, never tighten it to bulge... you're asking for a split! ...and the "dual" (also incorrect type) hose clamp arrangement is just scary to me.
