Best Bang For Buck?

I finished up with all the little odds and ends now, and I would like to get a little more spunk outta the engine. In your guys opinion, what would be the best addition? Any help would be appreciated.

Opinion

I think the coolant bypass AND any K & N filter other than the drop-in rectangular one are overrated. (Coolant bypass as a year around solution, that is). I would say an improved exhaust (particularly Stebro) and the ECUTune chip if OBDI. And still remembering that the SVX was not intended to be a fast off the line car.

4.44 gears!
No other mod will give you the same bang for the buck!

Well, nitrous, but you have to refill it, and it can shorten engine life.

So as far as the K&N, is it better to go with a drop in rectangular or should I go fab up one of the cone ones?

If you put a round or conical one inside the engine compartment, you will LOSE HP due to increased heat, so put a cone in your inner fender, or just go with a drop in rectangular filter.
It will change the sound of your engine, (the cone) and most Hot Rodders like the sound.

FWIW:

The cone filter, unless you rig a new “cold” air intake, will only draw hot air from the engine compartment. Any breathing efficiency you gain from the filter is lost through low air density of hot engine air.

K&N and Fram (Air Hog) make drop in filters. Around here the Fram is $10 cheaper.

Remember also that the re-usable filters MUST be cleaned often to maintain the advantage.
Also- the re-usable filters do let in more/ larger dirt partials. Yes, you get an easier breathing engine, but you sacrifice engine life for it.

Check out Bob is the oi guy site for a good bit of research/ data on these.

Does anyone have a K&N part #? as far as the cone shape and size? So I would have to cut into the fender then? and make a custom air duct? That shouldn't be a problem, just don't know if it will be the best for resale.

thanks for all your input everyone, keep it coming.

I actually took out my panel K&N in favor of a normal filter.

Cleaning the K&N was a pain and I didn't like the fact that oil could coat the MAF sensor and fine dust was getting in the engine.

I run all stock air filters in mine too for the same reasons.

As you live in Canada, don't do the throttle by-pass mod, you run the risk of iceing the throttle plates in the open position. The standard filter has been showen to be no restriction. I would just do the ECU chip. If you want more, do the lower diff ratio change 4.11:1/4.44:1.

Harvey.

Agreed Harv. Swapping to 4.11's or 4.44's is definitely the best bang-for-the-buck mod out there. You'll feel and notice the difference every time you step on the throttle - regardless of whether it's 100* or 40*outside!

Nitrous... Even 4.44 gears cannot give you an extra 75 hp. The only thing is you have to refill all the time and you could shorten engine life in using it. I will be investing in the funny stuff soon so I guess I may be biassed to suggest it. Also a nice 4.11 5mt is no slouch, esp off the line... Chike knows that for a fact
